Leading Ladies: Rachel Nichols and Katy Perry Land Big Roles
Although there's all kind of casting news hitting today, the two stories in particular that I want to focus on are about two women landing the lead female roles in two upcoming movies. First, Variety reports that The Smurfs has gained four voice actors: Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf (who?) and musician Katy Perry (R) as Smurfette. I think this is Perry's first acting gig, but she's only really voice acting in it. Secondly, Latino Review reports that Marcus Nispel's Conan remake will star G.I. Joe's Scarlett - Rachel Nichols (L) - as the leading lady and heroine Tamara.
I guess I'm just a bit excited by the news that Katy Perry is voicing Smurfette because that's a very big role to land. I don't want to bring up the Smurfette fantasy crap, but at least we now have an actual good-looking singer behind the character. I'm not expecting to like The Smurfs movie that much, but I'm definitely more interested now that she's involved along with the legendary Jonathan Winters. As for Rachel Nichols, she was fine in G.I. Joe but I personally haven't seen her in much else besides that. It's still good to see her land a gritty, tough, action-heavy role. Especially because her character description is: "A master of martial arts, she has been trained to be the Queen’s servant, bodyguard and best friend." Sounds awesome - bring it on!
