Though last weekend's Academy Awards didn't see fit to send any love to An Education, you can't deny that director Lone Scherfig crafted one hell of a drama and brought out the best in Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard. Last December, after An Education had made the festival rounds and hit limited theaters, we learned that Scherfig would be directing the romantic comedy One Day, and now ComingSoon discovers that Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess are attached to this story, about Dexter and Emma, who meet for the first time during their graduation in 1988, and proceed to meet one day every year for the next 20 years.
The news comes from producer Nina Jacobson (while out promoting Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and she says nothing is official but, "their deals are being negotiated right now." The story has the feel of a serial version of Before Sunset (which of course, itself, is a sequel to Before Sunrise) but with the When Harry Met Sally flow of tracking their lives and loves until they realize they were meant for each other. An Education proved Scherfig knows how to handle romance without being too whimsical or even cliche, so I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles this adaptation of the novel of the same name from British author David Nicholls.
