Mandate Fast-Tracks Diablo Cody's New Script 'Young Adult'

March 25, 2010

Diablo Cody

I know not everyone is a big fan of screenwriter Diablo Cody, but I think she's written some refreshingly unique scripts and I'm always at least interested in her new projects. Although she's already got Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament and Sweet Valley High in the works, is reporting that Cody's other new script called Young Adult has been put on the fast-track at Mandate Pictures. The big selling point is that this is the same production company behind Juno, but Jason Reitman's not involved, so that doesn't mean much. Cody is also producing the film along with Mandate, Mason Novick, and Malkovich's Mr. Mudd Productions.

EW doesn't have any plot info on Young Adult except that it's been called a "comedy with a strong dramatic backbone." However, in a recent interview with Cody, Vulture (via SlashFilm) discovered that the screenplay is "about a woman who's stalking her high-school sweetheart." She also says it has elements of humor, "but it's pretty serious and fucked up." Awesome. Cody says that it's kind of about a woman as an antihero, which is a pretty interesting twist on the norm in Hollywood. This is why I really do like Cody's ideas, they're bold and unique and original and, almost always, "fucked up." Will be very curious to hear more about this. Hopefully they get a director attached and gets things rolling sooner than later. Anyone else interested?

Not a fan of her work at all. Jennifer's Body has to be one of my all time most hated movies.

Well even if Jason Reitman was involved I don't think it will make much difference. I agree with #1, she's just a one hit wonder of screenwriting. Plus I still can't get my head around all the praise Juno got, For a start although Ellen Page showed talent she was just annoyance throughout most of the film but you have to blame it with the material she was given. Plus HOW ON EARTH was that film nominated for best director and best picture!??!?!!?
  • One success, a good writer does not make. I've been casually following Diablo Cody's projects out of mere curiosity (I loved Juno but hated Jennifer's Body), but I'm approaching all her future stuff with a healthy degree of skepticism. Like the debut record of virtually all musicians that break into the big time, the debut script is usually comprised of years worth of blood, sweat and tears, and usually a healthy assortment of past material. What separates the one-hit wonders from the true professionals is the ability to duplicate the success in a much shorter timeframe with elevated expectations. Cody has yet to adapt.
