Mark Strong Might Play Sinestro in Green Lantern, Not Haley!
Looks like they've cast another great actor in this! Up until today we thought it was Jackie Earle Haley who was going to end playing the villain Sinestro in DC Comics' Green Lantern, but apparently that was never the case. "No, that's completely wrong," director Martin Campbell told MTV in an interview today. "In fact, we're in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro." Hell yes! Mark Strong, who is England's "secret weapon," has been playing lots of villains recently (in Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, Robin Hood). I like Jackie Earle Haley a lot, but I love Mark Strong even more, and I'm so excited to see him joining this!
"He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro," Campbell said. "If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he's very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life." Woops! Look like that big scoop from HitFix the other day was a bunch of baloney. Campbell also gave MTV a rundown on what characters we can expect in this: "Well, Kilowog will be, Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it's a complex story." Indeed!
For those that aren't familiar with Green Lantern, that means we're going to be seeing some gnarly aliens. Sinestro has purple skin (in some comics) and comes from the planet Korugar. Kilowog is an ugly looking big ass alien who just so happens to be a gifted genetic scientist that comes from the planet Bolovax Vik. I'm very glad to see that Campbell is including these kinds of characters in the movie. "The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right." The good news is that everything we've heard so far is perfect. And Mark Strong is another exceptional addition.
