Marvel Moving Forward on 'Iron Fist', Hires 'xXx' Screenwriter

Iron Fist

Aw come on, why this writer? We've heard occasional mention every so often that Fist was one characters Marvel was soon going to be bringing to the big screen, however this is the first actual announcement we've seen. Deadline reports that Marvel Studios has hired screenwriter Rich Wilkes (Airheads, xXx, Punk Like Me) to start writing the first draft of an Iron Fist movie. Iron Fist is a martial arts expert from the Marvel Universe whose battle with a dragon ended when he plunged his hands inside of the beast's molten heart, turning his fists into indestructible weapons and, of course, turning him into a Marvel comic book character.

Marvel tried to make an Iron Fist movie with Artisan nearly a decade ago, with martial arts expert Ray Park the frontrunner to play Daniel Rand, but that never came about. Marvel also recently began work on a Dr. Strange movie, hiring Conan writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to work on a film from a superhero property that "four studios tried to crack over the years." Both Iron Fist and Dr. Strange will be distributed by Disney, the first few after the studio bought Marvel last year. The Iron Fist comic mythology was created by Ray Thomas and Gil Kane in the 1970s, when popularity of martial arts films was on the rise.

I know that Iron Fist is a fan favorite for a lot of comic book fanatics, and I want to see them deliver a kick ass adaptation, but why is the guy responsible for creating the awful xXx franchise the best writer for this? Maybe he's a huge fan of Iron Fist, and that's good because we need that passion for a great script, but I'm just very worried about this project knowing he's involved. We'll keep you updated. What do you think?

    um...no. well maybe.

not best to look at past scripts hell Zak Penn(Elektra,X3) wrote Incredible Hulk Thor Screen writer Don Payne(My Super Ex-Girlfriend,4: Rise of the Silver Surfer) even the captain america screen writers only wrote Narnia films
  • Xerxex
Yeah the screenwriters here don't bring much confidence.
  • Spider94
if luke cage isnt going to be in the movie then no...they shoulda just made a heroes for hire movie and get it over and done with not just a iron fist movie
  • Jimmy Love
Is it a full movie or one of the shorts they had announced?
  • harm
An Iron Fist movie by iteslf though can be made for a lot cheaper than Luke Cage (and I think Sony owns the rights to him) and a Heroes For Hire movie - so its an economical decision. I'm not sure whats up with cheaping out on the scripts. Seriously dumb move. xXx was dumb fun that has NOT aged well. I'd be afraid that this would be the same. BUT - Ray Parks for this would be EPIC WIN!
  • Big Boss
Hold on, they passed up a RAY PARK lead??? SMH...
  • Colt
"why this guy?" really Alex? read the comics and then you'll realize how dumb that question is. Iron Fist is a great character. only thing would make it better is if Luke Cage is involved.
  • James
You know what I would honestly like to see?? Scrap this, the Luke Cage film and the Daredevil reboot... mold them ALL into one... and we now have one big Hell's Kitchen heroes film!!!!
  • John Q Arbuckle
Looks like Spiderman, Time to get some new Ideas Hollywood!
  • movie mike
The costume looks like if batman and wolverine had a baby
  • tazz
Ryan Phillippe is the only choice for Iron Fist cause his a actor and a martial artist. @#6 harm ray park cant act u rather have a actor and martial artist. ray park dont have any good acting skills at all. i believe Marvel Studio got the rights to Luke Cage now.
  • LW
They should have it based in the 70s! Him and Luke Cage.
  • The Delightful Deviant
Iron Fist has gotten fairly nice revamp thanks to the noir Daredevil Brian Michael Bendis wrote, same as Luke Cage. If they stay true to the more recent comics especially the ones Ed Brubaker wrote then it would be a really decent film.
  • joe
who gives a shit? i have iron fists, so cool, so original. and XXX screenwriter? even XXX2 was better than that POS.
  • Xerxex
um...joe xXx 2 sucked ass man.
  • L
Look at Blade. He was a pretty obscure Marvel hero and the 1st one was awesome.
  • flydaddyfly
Michael Jae White as Cage. bring diversity to the screen and to the diverse audience who pour money into this business
  • 9mm
#14 is dead on. If they stick to the Rand that Bendis and Bru built up, then it can kick ass... Would be similar to Batman tho... However, with the XXX writer on it, i see an ENTER THE DRAGON sort of tournament wanna be shitty movie coming in the near future...
  • Solo Calrissian
I like 14's point too BUT.... when has a Marvel studio stayed true to Source material? (Act 1 of spiderman??) Given the earth-scorching of Iron Man 2, my confidence in marvel live-action movies is evaporating.

By "Ahh come on, why this guy? " you mean the screenwriter right? Cuz Iron Fist is a badass character. Read Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction's run on THE IMMORTAL IRON FIST if you need convincing. Or read the first 5 issues of Roy Thomas's run in the 1970's - that's your movie. This would be such an easy movie to get right and it could be done on the cheap. Danny Rand's father is obsessed with finding a hidden city in the Himalayas. His father is killed by his business partner during the climb. His mother sacrifices herself to save Danny. Danny Rand is orphaned, left for dead and is found by the inhabitants of the lost city that appears out the mists. They raise him as their own. He becomes a warrior. Gains the powers of the IRON FIST by plunging his fists into the molten heart of the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying. The city only comes into contact with Earth every 10 years. At the end of the ten years Danny goes back to civilization to avenge his father's and mother's deaths. At the end of the movie he could mean Luke Cage. Cue Luke Cage movie...Cue Heroes for Hire movie.
  • #8 & #21 - Yesss, sorry about that, I meant the WRITER, not the comic character. Iron Fist IS awesome, looking forward to seeing HIM on the big screen, but not looking forward to the writer who is adapting him. Sorry for all that confusion!
  • Uriah
This could be alright. Terry Crews for Luke Cage though- the only thing I've ever liked Michael Jai White in was Black Dynanite (which he co-wrote, directed and starred in).
  • flydaddyfly
crews seems to be too old, but he is a fav of mine as well. Blood and Bones intro with Jai White made me believe he could pull cage off, but it would have to be in the 70's. The guy who played Face in the recent A-team could be Iron Fist if necessary.
  • jah p
The only actors shoud play Iron Fist are Scott Akins of Undisputed 2 and 3 and Luke Goss from Hellboy 2!
  • blasphemer
the ONLY thing that will make this (YAWN...yet another comic book movie) work is Ray Park playing the lead role...
  • Jules
@18 flydaddyfly: You are so spot on with Michael Jae White as Cage, after seeing him in both Black Dynamite and Blood'N'Bone I'm sure there is no better candidate for the role of Cage. What about Jason "The Stath"Statham for Iron Fist? He's been saying he wants a superhero franchise for years, he's got the chops for the fighting skills... and as he proved in the Transporter Movies he has enough charisma to make you forget there is no screenplay - and since Marvel hired the writer of xXx- a movie that hardly even had a plot - we now know the Iron Fist movie won't have a screenplay. So bring on The Stath and Michael Jai White!
    • Antoniothomasj
Jason Statham would be good but I think he would be more suited to the roll of Orson Randal iron fist rather than Danny Rand.
  • Clover
    Terrible writer.
  • tivdatsun
I'm looking forward to this movie. It could be good. It might even be better than Catwoman. I sure hope so.
  • Johannes
Alex: Have you bothered watching the xXx movies yet? 'cause I remember you ditching them back in 2008 and in the next sentence saying you haven't seen them and never will.
