Last time we heard about director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson), he had just signed on to direct the adaptation of James Sallis' novel Drive with Ryan Gosling set to star. At the time Refn said he was hoping that would be his next film, but plans have changed as Film Shaft now reports Refn will next write, produce and direct his neo-western Only God Forgives, a Bangkok-set modern western (East meets West) about a Thai police lieutenant and a gangster settling their differences in a Thai-boxing match. Though there aren't any details about casting known just yet, Refn says that he'll be shooting this in Asia starting this summer.
After making somewhat of a hipster badass niche for himself with films like the Pusher trilogy and Bronson, Refn is poised to continue making unique action flicks that at the very least have truly unique characters in them. A neo-western will be new territory for sure, and it will be interesting to see how Refn evolves with his work. Hopefully Refn will return to Drive shortly after he completes this next project, so we can get a look at Gosling in his first action flick. Either way, it sounds like Drive is still a ways off, so we'll just have to start looking forward to some casting news for Only God Forgives instead. Stay tuned for updates! Interested?
