Now Simon West to Direct 'Protection' with Dwayne Johnson

After playing musical chairs with its attached talent a couple times before, the action thriller Protection is on its third lead actor, Dwayne Johnson. Along with his casting came the departure of director Patrick Alessandrin, and that left the project without anyone at the helm. But a press release from IM Global today states that Simon West (Con-Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) will direct this story of Hombre (Johnson), a mercenary Mexico City security operative, who is forced to smuggle the daughter of a high ranking judge and the judge's chief legal counsel across the border while being pursued by corrupt cops and drug lords.
This is a lower budget action film with only $35 million to spend on car chases, explosions and all that fun stuff, which is set to start shooting in New Mexico sometime this fall. However, no matter how many actor / director combinations the flick has gone through, it still remains a painfully generic action flick, and the addition of Simon West as director does nothing to change that (sorry Con-Air fans). But if you're looking for any semblance of hope, this will be a return to action form for Dwayne Johnson, so maybe there's some good to come from that? Honestly, I'm pretty neutral on him, too. Anyone else like the sound of this?
