Paula Patton Snags the Female Lead in New Mission Impossible
Since we learned that the next film won't simply be called Mission Impossible 4, we're just going to have to refer to it as the next installment of the Mission Impossible franchise when we tell you about Deadline's news that Paula Patton (Precious, Deja Vu) has nabbed the female lead role alongside Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner. Just last week we had heard Patton was in the running with actresses like Lauren German and Kristen Kreuk, but the race is over. Patton plays a young operative who works with Ethan Hunt (Cruise) on the Impossible Mission Force. It's an interesting cast to start what will apparently be a franchise reboot.
When Cruise and Mission Impossible 3 director J.J. Abrams came up with the concept for the fourth film in the franchise, it was always going to be a franchise reboot. I'm not sure if I believe that information, or if it's just a coverup to make people uneasy about studio interference with the franchise which is something we've been hearing a lot about recently. Patton has only previously seen some action in her team up with Denzel Washington in Deja Vu four years ago, so this will be quite the change for her (and a big mainstream boost). Either way, this is going to be a blockbuster to keep an eye on simply because Pixar's Brad Bird is directing his first live-action feature, and this should open up a whole new world of possibilities for him in the future.
Hopefully one of the new possibilities will be that 1906 earthquake project we've heard about for years (and years). We'll keep you updated on all the latest! What do you think of Paula Patton working for IMF?
