Disney is Already Close to Greenlighting a Sequel to Tron Legacy?
Though the reviews may be split almost right down the middle, you can't deny that Tron Legacy created some massive buzz and really pleased some hardcore geeks out there. It's also great to see the power of Comic-Con hype result in a big blockbuster and its moderately successful release. Well now it sounds like Tron Legacy was successful enough that the seeds planted in the franchise reboot of sorts may get a chance to grow. AICN has word from their "Grapevine of Industry Insiders" that Disney is incredibly close to greenlighting a sequel to keep the story of Sam Flynn pushing forward, so we won't have to wait another 28 years for a sequel this time.

Shane Black Directing a New Adaptation of 'Death Note' Manga
After seeing previews for small theatrical screenings of the Japanese live-action adaptations of the popular manga Death Note, I could not have been less interested in checking out the international film trilogy. However, news from Deadline that Shane Black (writer of the Lethal Weapon franchise and director of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) has been hired by Warner Bros. for a new live-action adaptation of the Death Note series. The story follows a boy named Light Yagami who stumbles upon the Death Note, a notebook that delivers death to any human whose name is written on its pages, and vows to use it to rid the word of evil.

Rogen & Goldberg Detail Hard R-Rated Animated 'Sausage Party'
Last summer, some vague news surfaced when The Playlist learned about a new animated film called Sausage Party from Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen. At the time no plot details were revealed, but Goldberg said the project would be a computer animated film and involved directors Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs. Aliens) and Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda). Then later Jonah Hill, who was said to be part of the project as well, said himself it would be an aggressive, hard R-rated animated flick. Now whilst promoting The Green Hornet, Goldberg and Rogen have given up some simple plot details, and this sounds like it's going to be a weird comedy.

Frances McDormand Aims to Capture Animals in 'Madagascar 3'
Though they may not be the best films to come out of DreamWorks Animation, families seem to love the antics of the wild animals in their Madagascar franchise. And the adventure is slated to continue with Madagascar 3. Since DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg recently commented on plans for a fourth installment of the animated franchise, this third one better deliver. It sounds like they're on the right track with some new voice talent coming on board as Heat Vision reports the talented Frances McDormand (Fargo, Burn After Reading) has landed the role of a calculating and goal-oriented animal control officer who leads her team to capture the animals.

First Official Photos for 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' with Jim Carrey
It was less than a year ago that it was first reported that a Mr. Popper's Penguins adaptation was in the works, and its only taken Fox nine months to sort out a filmmaker and get a cast, get it entirely shot and on track for an August 12th release this year. So here we are, showing the first official photos courtesy of USA Today. As expected, they're a bunch of shots of Jim Carrey as Mr. Popper goofing off with some penguins. C'mon, we all knew this was going to be an easy sell, they're so cute! Plus with memories of the hilarious Ace Ventura: Pet Detective coming to mind, I'll happily say this is an adaptation I'm actually looking forward to!

Greengrass Making Film on Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr
We already know director Lee Daniels has been developing Selma, a period drama focusing on the five-day, four-night protest march against those who were not in support of passing the National Voting Rights Act of 1965 that started in Selma, Alabama as well as the events leading up to it. Now another director is preparing his own location-specific Civil Rights related drama. Vulture reports that Paul Greengrass (United 93) has been planning to make Memphis, a film chronicling the events leading up to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. Greengrass even wrote it himself after doing his own research.

David O. Russell Rewriting and Directing Adaptation of '2 Guns'?
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Mark Wahlberg's reunion with director David O. Russell (The Fighter) for the video game adaptation Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. However, before that project, Russell was slated to direct Vince Vaughn in Old St. Louis, the story a traveling salesman who's an absentee father and how his life changes when his daughter becomes a part of it. But now it sounds like a new project with Vaughn is being set up instead as THR reports Russell is in early talks to rewrite and direct an adaptation of 2 Guns, a pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. More info below.

Chris Hemsworth & Tom Hiddleston on Fighting in Marvel's 'Thor'
We're almost two weeks into 2011 and that means we're that much closer to the May 6th release of Marvel Studios' anticipated adaptation of Thor. After that first spectacular trailer and a couple of cool posters, I'm hoping that Marvel doesn't decide to show too much more for giving away the finer points of the promising-looking comic book flick. However, I'm definitely interested in hearing some of Thor's lead actors talk about the action on set. Thankfully, SFX Magazine (via ComicBookMovie) just talked with the film's hero, Chris Hemsworth, and villain Tom Hiddleston, where they opened up a bit about fighting on the blockbuster.

Watch: Josh Radnor's 'HappyThankYouMorePlease' First Trailer
Catchy title, isn't it? Anchor Bay has debuted a trailer on Apple for Josh Radnor's writing/directing debut HappyThankYouMorePlease, which won the Audience Award at Sundance last year (read my glowing review). They're finally releasing this in theaters in March and now we've got a trailer to go along with that. The ensemble film stars Josh Radnor, Kate Mara, Malin Akerman, Zoe Kazan, Pablo Schreiber, Tony Hale and Richard Jenkins. It's a charming comedy that follows three different "couples", with a main focus on Radnor. It was one of my favorite indies from last year, so I hope a few of you check it out!

Mysterious New Sci-Fi Project 'Alien Sleeper Cell' in Development
Maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of this than I should, but you never know, something like this could be the next District 9. Variety posted a news article talking about producer Bill Block and his company QED International's upcoming line-up of projects, from a Just Cause adaptation to The Fields to Crosshair, but they also mention one in specific, without providing too many details. One project he's working on is called Alien Sleeper Cell, written by newcomer Morgan Davis Foehl, an assistant editor on I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, that deals with "otherworldly beasties." That's all they say and that's all we can find.

Directors Guild Awards Reveal Documentary Nominees for 2010
We know the Directors Guild of America already announced the feature film nominees from 2010 for their annual awards show. Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) and David O. Russell (The Fighter) all received well deserved first-time nominations, along with multi-nominated colleagues David Fincher (The Social Network) and Christopher Nolan (Inception). But now the DGA has announced their nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentaries in 2010, and considering some of the stellar work in that arena this year, the nominations probably weren't easily chosen. See the full list below!

First Official Look at Rooney Mara in 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'
Back in August we found out that Social Network star Rooney Mara had snagged the lead role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the first installment of the popular Millennium Trilogy. If there were any doubts that Mara would fit into the tough female lead role, almost all of those doubts should be removed as W magazine (via JoBlo) has delivered the first two photos of Mara decked out in Salander's trademark short, pitch-black haircut, leather jacket, and tattoos. Looking simultaneously sexy and kick-ass, I'm definitely interested to see what Mara does with this. Photos below!
