Viggo Mortensen Joins Universal's 'Snow White and the Huntsman'

Viggo Mortensen

With an evil queen already line up with Charlize Theron in talks to take the villainous role, Universal seems to have finally found their titular huntsman after names like Johnny Depp and Tom Hardy were connected to the role previously. Variety reports Viggo Mortensen is in talks to take the lead male role in this new version of the classic fairytale in Snow White and the Huntsman. Keep in mind that this has nothing to do with the other Snow White project that's been set up at Relativity Media with Tarsem Singh (The Fall) directing. The studio still has to find their Snow White, and it doesn't sound like it will be a known name.

The Details

After installing some new sod in their backyard, Dr. Jeff Lang (Tobey Maguire) suddenly has a problem with raccoons lifting up the layers of dirt and grass for whatever grub they can rustle up. But this is just the beginning of Dr. Lang's problems as these nocturnal creatures set off a chain of events that lead to stress, infidelity, pregnancy and even death. Yeah, these are ruthless raccoons. The Details follows the ludicrous and twisted happenings when a series of mistakes cause Dr. Lang to make some pretty unethical decisions that slowly begin to tear his family apart. Sundance 2011: 'Little Birds' is Generic & Contrived But Well Acted

Little Birds

The "coming-of-age" story has become a genre unto itself. Stories of teen angst, young love, and reckless mischief show up every single year, especially at the various film festivals. Therefore, it's no surprise that Little Birds, the feature film debut of writer/director Elgin James finds itself at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. This time around the characters coming into their own are 15-year old girls Lily (Juno Temple of Kaboom) and Alison (Kay Panabaker of "No Ordinary Family") living in a desolate town on the shores of the Salton Sea. Their friendship is tested by hormones and danger, but unfortunately, so was my patience.

Sundance Institute Partners with Kickstarter to Develop Indie Films

Kickstarter & Sundance Institute

Sundance Institute today announced a new program to connect its artists with audiences by offering access to top-tier creative funding and marketing. The funding component was announced as a partnership with Kickstarter, the largest platform in the world for funding creative projects online (visit the website). A few weeks ago, on a whim I decided to give some money to a project called A Year Without Rent, which received enough to reach its goal. There's a film at Sundance this year called The Woods funded by Kickstarter as well and this news only means great things to come for the website as well as the future of independent cinema.

Check This Out: Official Poster for Max Winkler's Film 'Ceremony'

Max Winkler's Ceremony

While there haven't been many trailers in the last few weeks, we have seen quite a few new posters. Another one I'm happy to share (via Moviefone) is for the directorial debut of Max Winkler, son of Henry Winkler, who's first film Ceremony debuted at the Toronto Film Fest last year (my review). The indie comedy stars Michael Angarano and Uma Thurman (on the poster) as well as Lee Pace, Jake M. Johnson and Reece Thompson. Angarano, thinking he's older than he is, rushes to a wedding on Long Island to try and stop the bride from being married because he thinks he's in love with her. It's a fun flick and hits theaters in spring.

Michael Fassbender to Play an Android in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'

Michael Fassbender

We've got a double-dose of exciting news regarding Ridley Scott's Prometheus today, so let's get right into it. Heat Vision reports that rising star and extremely talented actor Michael Fassbender has landed a role in Ridley's return to sci-fi, the former Alien prequel turned original sci-fi. They don't have any details on his character, but do say that he will play an android. The other news is that Fox has rescheduled the film from its March release to June 8th, 2012, taking a strong early summer spot that Disney's John Carter of Mars originally had before it moved up to March 2012. This seems like it will be an epic return to sci-fi for Ridley.

John Travolta Probably Heading Back to Crime for John Gotti Biopic

John Gotti / John Travolta

Last December we found out that director Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, Alpha Dog) was going to direct a biopic about reformed criminal John Gotti Jr. and his mobster father, the late head of the Gambino crime family. Simply titled Gotti, the project would focus on the father and son relationship between the two Gotti men. Now it sounds like we know who will play the senior crime boss and father in this biopic as EW reports John Travolta is in serious talks to lead the film which will actually cover three generations of the crime family. Though this isn't official news yet, it helps that Cassavetes once co-starred with Travolta in Face-Off.

Christian Bale Maybe Going from 'The Dark Knight' to 'Dark Tower'?

Christian Bale

At the end of 2010 we found out that Ron Howard's ambitious interlocking film and TV adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series may have two frontunners to lead the project. Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen were reported to be the leading candidates to play Roland Deschain, last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, and humanity's last hope to save a civilization that will crumble unless he finds the Dark Tower. But now a new, more enticing name has apparently surpassed those two actors as the top contender for the job with New York Post reporting Christian Bale is in the running for the project.

Naomi Watts Lands Desk Job as FBI Secretary for 'J. Edgar' in Biopic

Naomi Watts

Though the role was once a consideration for Charlize Theron, the actress chose to take the part of the evil queen in Snow White and the Huntsman instead of a supporting role in Clint Eastwood's biopic J. Edgar. However, now we have word on what lovely actress end up taking part in the story of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover as Variety reports Naomi Watts has stepped up to fill the gap in the cast. The Australian actress will play Helen Gandy, a Justice Department file clerk who ended up being Hoover’s personal secretary. She loyally worked for Hoover starting in 1918 and stayed in that position until Hoover passed away in 1972.
