Simon Kook in a Trailer for Cheesy Thai Action Movie 'The Microchip'
"Give me back the chip!!" Don't shoot the messenger, but apparently this Microchip flick stars a guy who is to replace Tony Jaa, the Thai martial arts superstar who can't seem to get away from Ong Bak. The film is called The Microchip and it's a terribly cheesy Thai action movie starring Simon Kook - the dude that's supposed to be just as good as Jaa. Quiet Earth found the trailer and I know it's pretty bad, but at least it's something to watch. The story obviously involves some microchip being stolen or something, but it doesn't matter. Give it a shot if you wish, but don't blame us if you hate this, it is very cheesy. Extended cut here.

Comedy Central Reveals Nominees for 1st Annual Comedy Awards
Sure, the Oscars are coming up this month, but there's not much awards love for comedies when the season gets into full swing. Yes, the Hollywood Foreign Press pretends to give awards to comedies with their Best Musical or Comedy categories, but why is comedy lumped in with musicals? And when movies that are not musical or funny (The Tourist) get nominated, there's obviously a problem here. Well MTV Networks and Comedy Central have aimed to fix that with the 1st Annual Comedy Awards which will honor the best comedy films, actors, TV series, digital content and stand-up acts. Check out the list of nominations below!

Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer Joining 'Dark Shadows'
With Johnny Depp taking the lead, Eva Green and Jackie Earle Haley recently signing on for the film, the cast of Dark Shadows can't get much better. But now Tim Burton has brought on a couple of previous collaborators to the project as well. Deadline reports Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter are being lined up to join the adaptation of the the daytime TV horror serial that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, logging over 1,200 episodes filled with ghosts, ghouls, vampires, zombies, werewolves, parallel universes, and time-paradoxes. Pfeiffer is currently in talks, but Carter hasn't yet begun official negotiations just yet.

From the Page: An Introduction and Look at Oscar Scripts - Part I
Welcome to From the Page, a new series on FirstShowing that takes a closer look at the original source or blueprint for some of our most beloved and despised films: the screenplay. Every week we will glimpse at the page of known, and sometimes not-so-known, scripts to view scenes in their original form (see below for an example, it'll make sense). I'll give a brief history of the story or the writer behind it. Occasionally we may even see the scene again, courtesy of YouTube, and often I will attach the link for you to download the entire screenplay (if publicly available). Let's kick this off with a look at a script nominated for an Oscar this year!

Watch: First Badass TV Spot for Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch' Arrives
"Your mind is the greatest weapon." It's never too early to post the first of something, so here it is, the first 30-second TV spot for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, debuted online via ComingSoon. We've seen a whole hell of a lot for this stylistic, female-led fantasy-action movie already, including a couple of trailers, handfuls of posters, BTS featurettes and so much more. But it's coming down to the last month left before release and Warner Bros is revving up the engines to make sure everyone is out in theaters seeing this. I personally can't wait, I still think it looks awesome, like pure popcorn entertainment that I've got to see in theaters. Enjoy!

Now on Netflix Instant: Apollo 13, Moulin Rouge, Dogtooth & More
It's been about a month since we've had a decent dump into the Netflix Instant library, but we've got a whole batch of new titles for your enjoyment this week. There's definitely something for everyone, even people who like terrible movies such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. There's a couple of ventures back into history, two great works from Baz Luhrmann, some decent flicks from 2010 and plenty oldies but goodies. As a bonus, if you're a Kevin Smith fan, you should probably check out his newest pseudo stand-up special Kevin Smith: Too Fat for 40. Otherwise, there is plenty new to enjoy. So what's in our queue this week?

Fantastic First Poster for Jim Sturgess & Anne Hathaway's 'One Day'
Did you spend Valentine's Day with someone you love? If not, well, here's some more romantic imagery to end your gloomy day. Yahoo debuted the official poster for An Education director Lone Scherfig's new film One Day, starring the lovely Anne Hathaway and lovelier Jim Sturgess. I do really admire this poster, the coloring and their use of only one, albeit very mawkish, photo of Hathaway and Sturgess kissing. It also reminds me of that great Blue Valentine poster. It's a very refreshing design to see used, compared to most of what Hollywood puts out (blue/orange) and I'm looking forward to seeing the film anyway. Check it out!

Depp Talks About How He'll Play Barnabas Collins in 'Dark Shadows'
With casting like Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley and Bella Heathcote finally coming together, Tim Burton's new take on Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp is actually going to film this year for release in 2012. As we've known for awhile, Depp will be playing Barnabas Collins, the quintessential 200-year-old vampire originated by Canadian actor Jonathan Frid in the 60's TV daytime soap that this is based on. Depp, who's spoken plenty about his love for Barnabas over the years, talked with MTV about how he's essentially going to pay his acting respects to Jonathan Frid, with "a couple of different touches here and there." More ahead!

Robin McLeavy Lands a Role in 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter'
Briefly: Another update on Timur Bekmambetov's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which now has a cast that includes Benjamin Walker as Abe Lincoln, Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper. Latino Review is reporting that, despite auditioning other big names like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, it is Australian actress Robin McLeavy who will be playing the role of Mary Todd, Lincoln's love interest and eventual wife, in the film. Todd is described in the script as a petite 20 year old brunette. Sounds like she's a perfect fit! McLeavy appeared in 48 Shades and starred in The Loved Ones (trailer), but this will be her first big Hollywood role.

Peculiar Anatomic Poster for Almodóvar's 'The Skin That I Inhabit'
¿Que tal llevar no piel? I was emailed by a reader from Spain today linking me to this odd teaser poster for Pedro Almodóvar's new film The Skin That I Inhabit, which is the literal translation of the Spanish title La Piel que Habito (even though I've seen it as The Skin I Live In elsewhere). The first still, seen above, was released a couple of months ago, but Spanish newspaper El Pais (via The Playlist) has revealed the first full teaser poster for The Skin That I Inhabit with Antonio Banderas and it's a bit odd - peculiar really is the best way to describe it. It honestly kind of reminds me of a science text book from high school. Take a look!

The Weekly Assignment: First Edition - An Unconventional Romance
In the spirit of dedicated film students - both of the university and of the heart - I welcome you to FS.net's first ever "Weekly Assignment" - a chance to collectively watch films and collect bits of show-and-tell to share together as an assembly of cinephiles and fanboys/fangirls. Once a week I will post an "assignment", essentially a film-related activity (don't think of it as homework) and hopefully it's something that intrigues you enough to find the time to participate. The comments below will be our "class" and the place for us to discuss what we've learned! (Because the goal is to see something new every week.) It should be lots of fun!
