After Four Years Paramount is Giving Up on Adapting 'Dune' Again
It's been over fours years and directors like Peter Berg (Hancock) and Pierre Morel (Taken) have most recently attempted to get the adaptation off the ground, but Deadline reports that long gestating, new take on Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune is now dead. Apparently Paramount Pictures and the book's rights holders have parted ways as one of the holders, Richard P. Rubenstein says, "Paramount’s option has expired and we couldn’t reach an agreement. I’m going to look at my options, and whether I wind up taking the script we developed in turnaround, or start over, I’m not sure yet.” Well, that sucks.

Alan Rickman Set to Join Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz for 'Gambit'
After learning that Michael Hoffman would direct the Coen Brothers scripted remake of the 1966 British caper comedy Gambit, the film was given a huge boost with the addition of Colin Firth, fresh off his Oscar-winning turn in The King's Speech. Then Cameron Diaz came along and joined Firth for the story about a London art curator (Firth) who plans to con a wealthy collector into buying a fake Monet painting. As part of the ruse, he recruits a Texas steer roper (Diaz) to play a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII. Now Crime Scene Pictures has revealed that Alan Rickman has also joined the cast.

Rob Marshall in Talks to Helm Johnny Depp's 'The Thin Man' Remake
Last October we heard that superstar Johnny Depp was eager to have Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall sit in the director's chair for The Thin Man, an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's 1934 novel. At the time Depp was said to be "aggressively courting" the filmmaker for the job, but now a new story from THR says the director is in talks for the Warner Bros. remake. In addition, the one element that might have held back his involvement, the lack of a script, has been rectified with the hiring of Jerry Stahl (who has worked on Bad Boys II and various episodes of "CSI") to adapt the book.

Brad Pitt's 'World War Z' on the Verge of Death Without Some Cash
Last July we found out that Brad Pitt would lead the adaptation of Max Brooks global apocalypse book World War Z, and shortly thereafter a leaked Paramount e-mail confirmed the project's priority status. However, it's been about nine months since the, and no development seems to have surfaced. Now Vulture says that's because Paramount is having some trouble finding a co-financier to help fund the film's $125 million+ budget. But the worst part is that unless someone steps up to the plate, the adaptation from Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) could end up dead in the water. Anyone have millions of dollars lying around?

Official First Look at Roman Polanski's Adaptation of 'God of Carnage'
Over a year ago we found out that a house arrested Roman Polanski was already hard at work on his next film, an adaptation of the Tony award-winning play God of Carnage. Then later that year a stellar cast came together with Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly as two sets of parents brought together by an altercation between their respective children. Now the film is simply being called Carnage and production is underway overseas in Europe, but Empire has our first look at the film featuring the main characters as they seem to be meeting for the first time. Check out the first look below!

Watch: Official Trailer for 'The Bang Bang Club' with Ryan Phillippe
"I'm a photographer. I want to hear your side of the story." We haven't heard anything about this film for a while (at least since that promo trailer), but an official trailer has just been released on Apple, which means it will also finally be hitting limited theaters soon. The Bang Bang Club is a drama based on the true-life experiences of four combat photographers trying to capture the final days of apartheid in South Africa. The cast includes Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman and Taylor Kitsch, but I can't really speak for any of the acting as I haven't seen this yet. It looks very intriguing, I'm still interested in checking it out. Watch below.

David Fincher Being Lined Up to Direct Angelina Jolie in 'Cleopatra'
Last summer we heard producer Scott Rudin was looking to deliver Cleopatra, a biopic on the famous Egyptian queen based on Stacy Schiff's best-selling biography Cleopatra: A Life. At one time James Cameron was interested in the project before he decided to focus on the two Avatar sequels, but now Rudin is looking to the director of his Best Picture nominated film The Social Network to take over. Deadline reports Sony is in talks with David Fincher to take over the project that still has Angelina Jolie attached to play Cleopatra herself. Apparently this will be the first time the story has been told from the queen's perspective.

WB Looking at McAvoy, Garfield, Fassbender or Pine for 'Akira' Roles
Tetsuuuuoooooo!! Last we heard just a few months ago, Warner Bros' live-action adaptation of Akira, still set to be directed by Albert Hughes (one half of the Hughes Brothers), was getting a polish by screenwriter Steve Kloves (of the Harry Potter franchise). It seems like that did the trick, as Deadline now reports that Kloves' draft has "the studio brass excited" which is always a good sign. But beyond that, who are they now sending this new script to? I hate reporting on more "short list" and early casting rumors, but this is one of those projects that deserves the extra attention. Especially once you hear who they're courting for the leads.

Ian McShane to Play Royalty in Bryan Singer's 'Jack the Giant Killer'
Though an already impressive cast has been assembled that includes Bill Nighy (Pirate Radio), Stanley Tucci (Easy A), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge) and Nicholas Hoult (Clash of the Titans) as the titular hero, the cast of Jack the Giant Killer gets a little more impressive today. Heat Vision reports the masterful Ian McShane, who will next be seen as the infamous pirate Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, has also joined the cast of Bryan Singer's action fantasy adventure. The story follows a farm boy (Nicholas Hoult) who leads an expedition to free a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson) taken hostage by a giant.

Jon Turteltaub Has 'Unreasonable Doubt' in New Romantic Comedy
After helming both installments of the National Treasure franchise and most recently The Sorcerer's Apprentice, it looks like director Jon Turteltaub is toning down the action and adventure for a little bit. THR reports the filmmaking will be at the helm of Unreasonable Doubt, a romantic comedy from "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" producer and Serendipity writer Marc Klein. The generic sounding story follows two jurors who fall in love during a court case. As plain as this romantic comedy sounds in the logline though, perhaps someone like Marc Klein can bring something special to a genre that always struggles to be original.

SXSW Video Interview: Anton Yelchin for Mel Gibson's 'The Beaver'
In The Beaver, Porter is a character who hasn't found a definition for himself yet. He is caught in a world where he hates his father but finds himself growing more and more like him every day. It took a strong actor to pull off such a role convincingly, and Jodie Foster found the right one. Anton Yelchin has been making a name for himself ever since Hearts in Atlantis in 2001, with major roles in Terminator Salvation and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. I luckily caught up with Yelchin at SXSW and talk for a bit about working on The Beaver, acting alongside veteran actors like Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and playing against a beaver hand puppet.

Yet Another New Trailer for Illumination's Easter Bunny Movie 'Hop'
Yep, another trailer for this movie. They must be really desperate or just shooting for the moon. Universal has released a third, or fourth (I've lost count) official trailer via Deadline for Illumination Entertainment's Hop starring James Marsden, Kaley Cuoco and Russell Brand as the voice of the CGI Easter Bunny who comes to our world. All is explained in this one. It's already due out in theaters next weekend and we've already seen at least one full trailer anyway. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not that interested in seeing this, just too sugar-coated for my taste (pun intended). Watch the final Hop trailer below if you wish.
