Paul Feig's 'Bridesmaids', Another Take - A Female Writer's Reaction

Bridesmaids

Girls say the F word too. And now the whole world knows it thanks to Bridesmaids, directed by Paul Feig and produced by Judd Apatow, a funny but far from perfect take on the raunchy adult comedy from the perspective of the ladies. I wanted to take a moment to talk about my thoughts on the film following Jeremy's review from earlier in the week. I do want to affirm that I did enjoy Bridesmaids; it was, after all, the first summer movie I had the chance to catch (sorry Thor) and I laughed a lot, but as a screenwriting student fresh off the graduation boat I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

Must Watch: First Full Trailer for B&W Silent Cannes Film 'The Artist'

The Artist Trailer

This is a must watch for a reason - it looks phenomenal. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival tomorrow morning (I will be seeing it then) is a film called The Artist, a black-and-white silent film from French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius about the silent film era in Hollywood. Most probably haven't heard about this, but I'll be damned if it doesn't look amazing, not just a wonderful homage to these kind of films, but a complete transposition back to 20s and early days of cinema. It stars two French actors - Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo - but also features John Goodman and James Cromwell. I cannot wait to see this!

Gareth Edwards Not Directing the 'Monsters' Sequel for Vertigo Films

Monsters

Wait - there's a sequel to to the cult sci-fi hit Monsters in the works? Apparently so. ScreenDaily (via The Playlist) is reporting details on Monsters 2 coming from the Cannes Film Festival, as Vertigo Films is currently working on early pre-sales and financing. Unfortunately, writer/director Gareth Edwards will not be returning, as he has moved on to helm Godzilla for Legendary out in Hollywood. Instead, "emerging hotshots" Brent Bonacorso, of a short called West of the Moon, and Jesse Atlas will take the reigns this time, with Edwards and the film's co-star Scoot McNairy at least executive producing. Very interesting news.

Udo Kier Makes His Debut in Another Teaser for Nazi Sci-Fi 'Iron Sky'

Iron Sky Teaser Trailer

We Come in Peace! Blind Spot Pictures is finally ready to unleash their Nazis-on-the-Moon movie Iron Sky, with funding and filming now complete and the ever-important (and expensive) post-production visual effects work underway. We've been talking about this film for years as its been in the works for a long time, but THR is reporting that it now has an official April 2012 release date, along with VFX being done by Energia VFX, and a spiffy teaser poster as well. They've also debuted an awesome new teaser featuring Udo Kier as Wolfgang Höss and a quick glimpse at some impressive "Meteorblitzkrieg" effects at the end. Enjoy!

Ron Howard's 'Dark Tower' Adaptation Staying at Universal After All

Dark Tower

Earlier this month we heard that Ron Howard's epic adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series might be in trouble at Universal, but could end up going into turnaround and get made at another studio. Well, it appears the axe has been avoided this time as THR reports Universal is moving forward with the project that includes three films and two seasons of television to tell the sprawling story of Roland Deschain, the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, and humanity’s last hope to save a civilization that will crumble unless he finds the Dark Tower. However, it sounds like the project will be delayed a bit.

Must Watch: Colin Farrell Bares Teeth in First Trailer for 'Fright Night'

Fright Night Trailer

We've seen some glimpses at the remake of the original 1985 film, but now a first official trailer for Fright Night has finally arrived via IGN. This modern take on the 80's horror take thrusts Anton Yelchin, Christopher Miintz-Plasse, Toni Collette and Imogen Poots into a sticky situation as they found out Jerry (Colin Farrell), the new resident in their neighborhood is a vampire. This looks like a really cool contemporary update of the original film, but I'm not sure about the need for 3D in such a literally dark toned film. Sadly there is only a brief glimpse of David Tennant, but check out the first full trailer below!

Watch: First Full Teaser Trailer for Rod Lurie's 'Straw Dogs' Remake

Straw Dogs Trailer

"Don't worry about that, we're all going to get what we deserve." ScreenGems has debuted a teaser trailer for the long-awaited remake of Straw Dogs, the 1971 thriller starring Dustin Hoffman. This new version, from director Rod Lurie, stars a fresh new cast, including James Marsden and Kate Bosworth as out of towners who relocate to the deep South and encounter trouble with the locals. Alexander Skarsgård, Walton Goggins and Drew Powell also star. There are some very ominous shots and this trailer has a very unique structure, but I'm not really into it. Looks like something we've already seen many times before.

Lee Daniels to Direct Tobey Maguire and Zac Efron in 'The Paperboy'

The Paperboy / Lee Daniels

We've heard about his involvement with an adaptation of Anna of the Tropics and a remake of Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria (which I'm vehemently opposed to), but now Precious director Lee Daniels has another project in his sights. Risky Biz reports the Oscar nominated director is set to helm a sexual thriller called The Paperboy. In addition, Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, Sofia Vergara and Zac Efron will all star in the adaptation of Pete Dexter's novel. Apparently Pedro Almodovar (Volver, Bad Education) had also been developing this project for more than a decade up until earlier this year.

First Look: Badass Bruce Willis in Rian Johnson's New Sci-Fi 'Looper'

Looper First Look

Oh hell yes! Empire has debuted the first official photo from Rian Johnson's new sci-fi film Looper, which we've been hearing about and writing about for a year or so. Starring in the film is Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a time-traveling looper named Joe, and Bruce Willis as the older version of the same person. If that casting doesn't intrigue you, I'm sure this photo will at least pique your interest, until we see a trailer that is. I have a feeling they're trying to illicit similar feelings as Inception in terms of badass sci-fi action, but it's pretty damn awesome seeing Willis brandishing a weapon like that in the new Rian Johnson flick. Check it!

Lars Von Trier Teams Up with Martin Scorsese for 'Five Obstructions'

Martin Scorsese & Lars Von Trier

This news is going to make a lot of cinephiles quite giddy. ScreenDaily is reporting that it is now official that Danish director Lars Von Trier will team up with none other than Martin Scorsese for a new version of The Five Obstructions. For those that don't know what this is, the original Five Obstructions was made in 2003, and Von Trier challenged his fellow Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth to remake his short film The Perfect Human five times, while providing him with a different set of "obstructions" each time, forcing Leth to "rethink the history and characters in his original film." What a fascinating film concept to bring back.

'Silver Linings Playbook' Reunites Mark Wahlberg & David O. Russell

Mark Wahlberg and David O. Russell

Last December we learned that Bradley Cooper and Anne Hathaway would star in an adaptation of Matthew Quick's novel The Silver Linings Playbook with director David O. Russell in line to direct. However, Vulture now reports that while Russell is still very much directing the film, it will actually be his lead actor from The Fighter, Mark Wahlberg, stepping up to star in the adaptation. At the time of the initial report, Cooper wasn't yet officially signed on, so it's not surprising that he ended up falling away from the project. As of now though, it's not clear whether or not Hathaway will actually still end up starring in the project.
