'Con Air' Director Simon West Set to Take Over on 'The Expendables 2'

The Expendables 2

This could either be a very good sign, or an early warning. Deadline is reporting that Millennium Films / Nu Image may finally have found a replacement director for Sylvester Stallone for their upcoming sequel, The Expendables 2. Apparently their top choice is Simon West, a British director known for big action in Hollywood, with a filmography including Con Air, The General's Daughter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Jason Statham's The Mechanic from last year. Production is schedule to start this summer and will bring back most of the original cast, including Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and Jet Li.

Must Watch: Chris Nolan, David Fincher in a 'Tree of Life' Featurette

The Tree of Life Featurette

Masters talking about masters. Fox Searchlight has just debuted a fantastic new featurette over on Apple for Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, which is already playing in art house theaters nationwide. Since they couldn't get the reclusive Terrence Malick himself in front of a camera, they got two other notoriously hard-to-find legendary directors instead: David Fincher and Christopher Nolan. Yes, this is awesome! The two of them talk about how Malick has inspired them and their love for the way he shot Tree of Life, which is indeed a gorgeous film. This is definitely the convincing needed to go see this while it's in theaters!

Watch: Charming & Inspirational New 'Dolphin Tale' Theatrical Trailer

Dolphin Tale Trailer

"In this changing world, it's harder than ever to find something extraordinary. But every once in a while, a symbol of hope breaks through." Warner Bros has debuted the new theatrical trailer for their inspirational family movie Dolphin Tale, the new "Free Willy of 2011" starring 13-year-old Nathan Gamble and Morgan Freeman, as well as Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. This looks incredibly charming and uplifting, as completely expected. I like that the kid uses his computer easily to find Freeman, but after that it gets a little overly sentimental. It may still be a great film, so check it out anyway.

Russell Crowe Cast as Superman's Dad in Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel'

Russell Crowe

Wow, did not see this casting coming! Russell Crowe playing Superman's dad in a Zack Snyder-directed reboot of Superman? Awesome! Variety is reporting that Oscar winning actor Russell Crowe has been set to play Jor-El, Superman's biological father from Krypton. Though other talented actors like Viggo Mortensen and Sean Penn have been vying for the role (Variety says "Christopher Nolan had all along been seeking an A-list thesp for Jor-El"), it was Crowe who finally agreed to it in the end. That must mean this role is very important to the story, which is great to hear, especially because this is a strong cast Snyder pulled together.

Could 'Phantom Menace' Ruin Our Chance of Seeing 'Star Wars' in 3D?

The Phantom Menace

It might seem like that headline is a bit of an oxymoron since The Phantom Menace has become part of the Star Wars canon for better or worse, but there's a chance that the 1999 prequel could end up ruining the chances of seeing the original trilogy in theaters in 3D. Back in March we learned that George Lucas' return to his sprawling space opera would return to theaters on February 10th, 2012 complete with the 3D treatment. While many of us have assumed that the rest of the films would follow suit, producer Rick McCallum recently had some words that call into question the certainty of seeing the complete saga in 3D.

First Teaser Poster for Disney's 'John Carter' is Dark But Not Thrilling

John Carter

Up until this point the film has been known as John Carter of Mars, but the new live-action film from Disney and director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL-E) is now simply titled John Carter (which sound less cool). Now we've got the first teaser poster for the film which tells the story of John Carter (Taylor Kitsch from X-Men Origins: Wolverine), a Civil War veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes involved with the planet's warring people. The poster isn't exactly amazing, but the trailer which will likely be out sometime very soon, should deliver. See the poster below!

Ben Affleck Making the Cast of 'Argo' Become Hostages for Two Weeks

Ben Affleck

Even though the life of an actor or actress can seem pretty glamorous at times, every now and then they go through some pretty grueling work to prepare for a role. Director Ben Affleck intends to make the cast of his upcoming film Argo really work for their paycheck in their preparation for the film. The story comes from a 2007 Wired article about the CIA used a fake sci-fi film to rescue Americans during the Tehran hostage crisis. In order to help the six cast members playing hostages in the film be better acquainted with claustrophobic and tense conditions, they themselves will be locked up together in a house for two weeks.

David O. Russell Circles Disney's 'Maleficent' & Talks Future Projects

David O. Russell

Just recently there was rejoice from video game fans when we heard that director David O. Russell would no longer be directing Mark Wahlberg in an adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Of course, that left a myriad of projects that Russell has been attached to over the past year, but we'll get to those later. Right now, another project has caught the director's eye as THR reports Russell is looking at Disney's Maleficent as a potential directing gig. Tim Burton recently left the project which tells the Sleeping Beauty tale form the evil witch's point-of-view, but this doesn't seem like Russell's cup of tea.

Academy Updates Best Picture Rules, Will Now Be 5 to 10 Nominees

Oscars

Big news from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today. AMPAS, who hosts the Oscars every year, has officially announced (via press release) a "new twist" to the 2011 Best Picture competition, plus a new element of surprise to the actual nominees. The Board has voted to institute a system that will now produce anywhere between 5 and 10 nominees in that category. That number won't be announced until the Best Picture nominees themselves are revealed at the January nominations announcement. This system seems to be their way of addressing the change in voting since expanding up to 10 nominees two years ago.

Official Poster for Rod Lurie's 'Straw Dogs' Replicates Original Design

Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs Remake

Everyone has a breaking point. Considered one of the greatest, classic poster designs ever is the broken-glasses-face of Dustin Hoffman on the 1971 Straw Dogs poster (see below). Coming up this fall is a remake of the film from director Rod Lurie, who recently took to his own twitter (@RodLurie) to reveal the official poster, which is essentially an updated version of that classic poster, but with James Marsden's face instead. Sadly, it's not as good either; that red tagline needs to be removed, no matter how good it may be, and so does that ugly face over the glasses. At least they tried. Check out both posters for comparison below.

'Hot Rod' Director to Helm 'Neighborhood Watch' Starring Ben Stiller?

Akiva Shaffer / Neighborhood Watch

Directors like David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) and Peter Segal (Tommy Boy) have previously circled the project, and Will Ferrell was once attached to star, but it looks like the gestating comedy Neighborhood Watch might be getting some new members. Heat Vision reports Akiva Schaffer, director of the underrated comedy Hot Rod, has been offered the job to helm the new comedy from 20th Century Fox and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps production banner. In addition, apparently Ben Stiller is now circling the project as his next film after finishing up the comedy Tower Heist from Universal and director Brett Ratner.
