Review: 'Conan the Barbarian' An Uninteresting Story of Man & Sword

Conan the Barbarian Review

The willingness to zone out during Conan the Barbarian comes within the film's first 10 seconds. An over-long, unnecessarily explanatory voice over setting up the world in which the action takes place is cliche enough. When it's done by Morgan Freeman, you know you're dealing with a film that has no interest in originality. So you zone out, lose interest, stop listening to what's being said and start wondering how many zeros Freeman's paycheck had in it. That's a problem, especially when it comes before a sword is swung or a head is lopped off. Granted, Conan the Barbarian has that in abundance, but like that opening narration

First Look: Disney's Animated 'Wreck-It Ralph' Movie Arcade Game

Wreck-It Ralph

One of the big surprises and highlights of Disney's movie presentation at the D23 Expo yesterday was a first look at Wreck-It Ralph, the next Disney Animation movie due out November 2012. As many of us have barely even heard of this project, it needs a proper introduction first, which is why Disney screened the first four minutes - only the storyboard version - to give us an idea of the story and what it was about. Suffice it to say, many of us are now considerably excited for this, and I'll do my best to explain why and give you a first glimpse via photos taken of the arcade game it's inspired by that was out on the D23 showfloor.

Don't Let Them In: New Set of Wordy 'Straw Dogs' Character Posters

Straw Dogs

I Will Not Allow Violence Against This House! A new set of character posters and complimentary official poster for Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs remake have hit the web, unveiled on the film's official Facebook (via Awards Daily). We've seen at least one trailer for this remake, starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgård and Dominic Purcell, and early buzz is that this might actually be good, but I can't say these posters are impressive. Some strong words, but they just look awkward as movie posters, and don't do anything to make me more interested in this. What about you? Click on any one below for full-size.

Indie Trailer Sunday: Steampunk Sci-Fi 'Thelomeris' Stunning Teaser

Thelomeris Teaser Trailer

"This is something that everyone wants, something that everyone seeks... forever." Yes, finally, a new indie trailer worth featuring today. It's a steampunk sci-fi indie film called Thelomeris, directed by Hungarian filmmaker Balázs Hatvani, about a man who rules a city stands up against fate and the end of the world. The cast includes some unique names like Mark Hamill, who's also even credited as a script consultant, James Purefoy, DJ Qualls and Lance Henriksen. Thanks to Twitch for the tip on the teaser. They've used some gorgeous CGI in this to make up the world on a low budget and I'm impressed, this looks great. Enjoy!

Pixar Announces Their Two, Still Untitled, 2013/2014 Movies at D23

Pixar

I'm attending the Disney D23 Expo down in Anaheim today and their big movie presentation was held early this morning, including a look at most of Disney's major movies between this year and next. During the Pixar portion of the panel, Disney Animation CCO John Lasseter introduced their line-up including the Planes spin-off, Brave, Monsters University, and finally, their two movies following University (due out June 2013). Unfortunately, both of their next projects are still untitled, but we at least have some info on them. One will be about dinosaurs, coming 2013, the other will be set "inside the mind" due summer 2014.

One of two big 80's remakes hitting theaters this weekend, Fright Night is an updated take on the Tom Holland campy horror comedy. With Craig Gillespie at the helm, this time they've set it in contemporary Las Vegas and given us Anton Yelchin as the unsuspecting victim, and Colin Farrell as his vampire next-door neighbor. Another 'Rambo: Last Stand' Screenplay Has Been Written, Submitted

Rambo

He's not dead yet! Even though there have been continuous ups and downs regarding the rumored Rambo V, word is it may be alive in some way. FEARnet (via Empire) recently interviewed writer Sean Hood (Conan the Barbarian, Cube 2) who revealed that he has submitted his screenplay for Rambo: Last Stand to Millennium. Over the years, a follow-up to Sylvester Stallone's 2008 Rambo has been developing in many forms, as a sci-fi film called Savage Hunt at one point, but this is their latest take and who knows what will happen. The good news is that Hood actually met with Stallone to help work on crafting the script.

Christian Bale Cast in Another New Upcoming Terrence Malick Film?

Christian Bale

Wait - there's another Terrence Malick film in the works, and it's not the one shot last year in Oklahoma with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams? So says Twitch. The site is reporting that Christian Bale is now cast as the lead in another untitled, unidentified project from the legendary "Terry" Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, Thin Red Line, New World, Tree of Life) that will start shooting in early 2012. All they know is it's a "story driven by a pair of dominant leads, one male and one female" and doesn't have as big of a cast as his other untitled in-the-can drama. Two more new Malick films in the next few years? This is exciting news.

There's been a oddly large amount of news related to Iron Man 3 in these last 24 hours, specifically a big update from Robert Downey Jr. on his early interactions with director Shane Black, who's taking over the franchise after The Avengers. Watch: First Trailer for 'Carnage' with Foster, Reilly, Winslet & Waltz

Carnage Trailer

"The victim and the criminal are not the same!" Nothing like a couple of mature adults quibbling over petty social issues. Oh but it gets good after a few words are exchanged. Twitch has posted the first official trailer for Roman Polanski's Carnage, his adaptation of Yasmina Reza's play God of Carnage, starring John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz. If you haven't seen the play, this trailer will catch you up quick. Two adult couples meet to discuss the fight their young children just got into, and it all eventually divulges into mayhem itself over the course of the day. This looks quite amusing. Check it out!
