Does an Oscar Qualifying Run for 'The Lady' Make it a Real Contender?

The Lady

Straight out of TIFF, Luc Besson's The Lady, a biopic of Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese pro-democracy activist and political prisoner, has just been acquired for US distribution by Cohen Media Group. Cohen has plans to release the film late this year in hopes that it will quickly enter the race of Oscar contenders, with a campaign focused on Besson's directing and performances from Michelle Yeoh (Memoirs of a Geisha), who plays San Suu Kyi, and David Thewlis (Harry Potter, Seven Years in Tibet), who plays her husband and biggest supporter that led the campaign for her Nobel Peace Prize win in 1991. More thoughts below.

Official Trailer for Creepy Horror 'The Awakening' with Rebecca Hall

The Awakening

For all the garbage from the horror franchise that gets thrown up on the big screen or straight-to-DVD, sometimes you have to be patient to find the really spooky thrillers. Now it looks like one may have found its way to the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival this week (stay tuned right here for coverage from the fest from our own Alex Billington), as Rebecca Hall (The Town) stars in The Awakening. The story follows an author and professional hoax exposer in London after WWI, who’s approached by a teacher (Dominic West) at a boy’s boarding school, who believes the students are being tormented by a ghost.

Watch: New UK Trailer for Ewan McGregor/Eva Green's 'Perfect Sense'

Perfect Sense Trailer

"Life goes on." Another new UK trailer has just debuted on Empire for the apocalyptic-ish drama Perfect Sense, which premiered at Sundance. The film stars Ewan McGregor and Eva Green as two budding lovers who try to stay connected in a chaotic world, as the story deals with the human race losing individual senses one at a time. Ewen Bremner also stars, which is why you'll see him a bit in this trailer. I saw this at Sundance and I really liked the concept behind it, but not exactly the film itself, though this trailer does a great job of selling it, as it's still all about love. Give it a shot, you might be quite interested in seeing this.

Must Watch: Awesome 'The Muppets' Trailer Riffs on 'Dragon Tattoo'

The Muppets Trailer - The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo

"But one trailer made us stop 'Dragon' our feet." Hahaha yes, this is just brilliant! Disney has unveiled their latest parody trailer for The Muppets, following up The Fuzzy Pack (The Hangover), Being Green (Green Lantern) and Kermit's Green With Envy (first teaser). This time they're riffing on that first The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer with a teaser called The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo, that has plenty of random Muppets scenes and that bold flashing text that, in this, is packed with tons of self-referencing jokes. Oh and they even wrote their own cover song, too. I totally love these trailers, this is hilarious. Enjoy!

Check These Out: Tim Doyle's Colorful New 'Logan's Run' Art Posters

Logan's Run Movie

I'm a huge fan of all things science fiction, which of course means I love the classic 1976 film Logan's Run with Michael York, even though not else everyone does. I actually saw it for my first time just last year and still loved it, which is why I'm happy to feature these rather colorful and sleek new designs for a Logan's Run poster made by artist Tim Doyle (via SlashFilm). The new print, with alternate colored variant, comes from Inside the Rock and includes a watermark for tommygood.com, which is where they'll be going on sale in a few days. I'm not crazy for this design, but it's a sleek update on the original, and worth seeing anyway.

Theatrical Trailer for Géla Babluani's '13' Remake with Jason Statham

13 Trailer

Sometimes fate is just a number. The official theatrical trailer for Géla Babluani's American remake of his own film 13 Tzameti, titled simply 13 this time, has debuted on Yahoo. The ensemble cast is lead by Sam Riley, but also includes names like Jason Statham, 50 Cent, Mickey Rourke, Alexander Skarsgård, Ray Liotta, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Ray Winstone and Michael Shannon. This isn't the first trailer we've featured, but after premiering a year ago, this is finally getting a theatrical release this October. I'm impressed, it actually looks pretty damn good, very intriguing as I still haven't seen the original. Have fun!

Surprise 8-Minute Trailer for Fincher's 'Dragon Tattoo' Being Screened

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Earlier this week I received a mysterious email alerting me that there was a screening of Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs remake on Wednesday night that I really needed to attend. I had no clue what to expect, but was surprised to find before the film an 8-minute long promo trailer for David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo featuring Trent Reznor's score and tons of stunning Fincher footage from the remake. The film's story is incredibly complex, based on Stieg Larsson's novels, and the full trailer introduces a lot of the characters and elements of that story before getting into flashes of scenes with a pounding score at the end.

A Special 'Family Guy' 10th Anniversary Event is Coming to Theaters

Family Guy

Though the wild antics of the Griffin family on Fox's hit animated series Family Guy don't fall within our wheelhouse, when the hilarity of the show heads to theaters, that's when we pay a little more attention. In celebration of the series' 10th Anniversary (the time the series spent canceled after its premiere in 1999 makes this accurate), 10 cities will have a special one night only event on September 15th called Something Something Something, Anniversary which will show the first episode of the new season, the fan favorite episode Road to the Multiverse and a special 22-minute bonus called History of the World.

Watch: Test PSA Video from Eric Powell's 'The Goon' Animated Movie

The Goon Test Footage

"Quality you can bludgeon with!" We're still waiting to see Eric Powell's animated comic book movie The Goon, as the project has been stuck in development hell, unable to get the financing. David Fincher even showed up to panel at Comic-Con in 2010 in support of the film, where they showed some early test footage in a bar. Following that event, a teaser trailer debuted, but the project still hasn't gone anywhere. Now Powell himself has released another test footage PSA on YouTube (via CS) featuring The Goon, with Clancy Brown as the voice (and Paul Giamatti as Franky), to try and drum up some more buzz. Check it out below!

Check This Out: Motion Poster for 'The Darkest Hour' Invasion Sci-Fi

The Darkest Hour

This upcoming sci-fi doesn't have a tagline yet, but it definitely needs one, as I've got to say something while we're watching some girl being zapped into oblivion by the lightning alien monsters! IGN has unveiled a new "motion poster" for Chris Gorak's The Darkest Hour, the alien invasion sci-fi flick set in Russia starring Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby. The official trailer for this movie debuted a few months ago, so we actually know what it's about and that it involves alien creatures that seem to be made of electricity, which is what this poster plays on. It may look odd at first, but just click on the play button, it will be properly sized.

Watch: Official Trailer for Cameron Crowe's 'We Bought a Zoo' Movie

Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo Trailer

"I like the animals, but I love the humans." 20th Century Fox has finally unveiled the official trailer via Apple for Cameron Crowe's adaptation of Benjamin Mee's We Bought a Zoo, a charming family drama about a father who moves his young family to the countryside to start a new life renovating a struggling zoo. Matt Damon stars as Benjamin Mee, with a cast including: Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, Patrick Fugit, Stephanie Szostak, Maggie Elizabeth Jones and Thomas Haden Church. Of course, play Sigur Ros in a trailer and it always helps, but at least we know they'll be scoring this film, too. Looks great!
