Toronto Review: 'The Raid' - One of the Best Action Movies in Years!

The Raid

Holy shit I haven't seen an action movie this good in years! I felt that way only 30 minutes in, but after the full 100 minutes, I still felt the same and had to exclaim that here, right upfront, because it deserves that much praise. I saw the Indonesian film The Raid at the Toronto Film Fest, it's the opening night Midnight Madness film, and it's crazy, with insanely awesome action non-stop throughout. Written and directed by Gareth Evans, the film takes place entirely in one big drug lord-controlled building, where the police raid is occurring, but things don't turn out as planned and the tides are completely turned just halfway through.

Ron Howard Will Direct Universal's Unique Super Powered Film '364'

Ron Howard

Today production began on his historical racing drama Rush starring Chris Hemsworth, and now director Ron Howard is attached to yet another project. Deadline has word that Universal Pictures has set Howard to direct 364, a new drama from Safe House writer David Guggenheim. The explanation of the title itself somewhat tells the story as it refers to the number of days in a year that a regular guy spends each year figuring out the heroic deeds he will perform on the one day each year that he has super powers. He's like Santa Claus, but instead of handing out presents and holiday cheer, he delivers justice and saves people.

Cool Conceprt Art from the 'Hellraiser' Remake That May Not Happen

Hellraiser

We've seen a terrible trailer for the awful-looking sequel Hellraiser: Revelations, but a remake of the original Hellraiser film from Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier (of My Bloody Valentine 3D and Drive Angry 3D) was supposedly still on the way. Well, Shock Til You Drop has recently learned from attendees of the Still Screaming event in LA that both the filmmakers were telling inquiring minds that it was unlikely that the remake was going to happen with the duo involved. However, the same online horror gurus have rounded up some concept art for Farmer and Lusser's new take on Pinhead, and it's pretty twisted stuff.

Mel Gibson Developing a Film About Jewish Warrior Judah Maccabee

Mel Gibson

In what seems like a move to get back in the good graces of those offended by his anti-Semitic remarks made during his highly publicized arrest in 2006, actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson is working on a film that will tell the story of Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee. Deadline reports Warner Bros. has made quite a strange move in getting Gibson to work with Basic Instinct and Showgirls writer Joe Eszterhas to script the revered story about how Maccabee teamed with his father and four brothers to lead the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies that had conquered Judea in the second century B.C.

Michel Gondry Returning to French Films with 'The Foam of the Days'

Foam of the Days / Michel Gondry

The director has been busy with films like The Green Hornet, Be Kind Rewind and the strange but unique forthcoming film The We & The I, but director Michel Gondry hasn't made a film in his native French tongue since The Science of Sleep in 2006. However, Variety has word that Gondry will return to French-language films with The Foam of the Days, an adaptation of Boris Vian's novel of the same name. Described as a surreal romance, the story sounds right up Gondry's alley as it follows a young man trying to save his wife from a terrible and strange illness caused by a water lily growing in her lungs.

Tom Cruise Looks Sick in 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol' Poster

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Don't get me wrong, the first trailer for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol certainly got me excited to see what The Incredibles director Brad Bird can bring to live-action filmmaking. It has everything a Mission Impossible sequel needs: a great ensemble team that includes Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway and Jeremy Renner, some promising action, a story full of deception and intrigue, and of course, Tom Cruise running. However, in this new teaser poster for the sequel, I have to say that IMF agent Ethan Hunt looks rather sickly, almost like Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 50/50. Anyway, see the poster below!

Rare Interview with Terrence Malick from 1974 Filmmaker's Newsletter

Terrence Malick

It's safe to say that Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life) is a director with an affinity for being in the shadows. For instance, a simple Google Image search returns multiple versions of the same photo (you know the one...where he looks like he's dressed up as Dr. Alan Grant for Halloween and someone yelled "Oh, Terrence!" and snapped a pic of him just as he turned around). Interviews with the auteur are even rarer. So, when we came across a conversation with Malick from a June 1974 issue of Filmmaker's Newsletter found on the All Things Shining: The Terrence Malick Blog, we just had to share it.

Watch: Full Teaser Trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's 'Extraterrestre' Lands

Extraterrestre Teaser Trailer

I don't even know what they're saying and I can't wait to see it. When strangers Julio and Julia wake up in the same apartment, groggy and hung-over from the night before, the last thing they are expecting is to discover that an alien invasion has taken place. In Extraterrestre, Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) melds science fiction, romance and black comedy in his latest feature about the darkly fascinating aspects of the human psyche. This looks quaint, quiet, charming and just damn good, but with that "black comedy" side, I expect there's more to it. Enjoy the first Spanish-language teaser trailer below!

Interview: 'Warrior' Writer/Director Gavin O'Connor on MMA & More

Gavin O'Connor and Tom Hardy on Warrior

Writer/director Gavin O'Connor (of Tumbleweeds, Miracle, Pride & Glory) is no stranger to presenting intense sports drama. The final moments of the central hockey event in his 2004 film Miracle is among the most intense sports moments in film history. With his latest film, the sensational MMA drama Warrior, though, he's off the ice and inside the cage. Centering on two brothers, Warrior is about a two-night mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament to determine who is the best fighter on the planet. But Warrior is much more than just men in a cage fighting, as O'Connor explains in our interview we conducted just this week.

Charlie Sheen Takes 'A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III'

Charlie Sheen

With Comedy Central's roast of the actor coming later this month, the once thriving sitcom star Charlie Sheen seems to somehow be enjoying his fall from grace (and apparently sanity) by making light of it with a whole slew of comedians. Despite losing his series role on 'Two and a Half Men" to Ashton Kutcher, it looks like Sheen has been fortunate enough to officially book another acting gig, this time on the big screen. Variety reports Sheen will lead A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III, a new project from writer/director Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford Coppola) that hits a bit close to Sheen's real-life issues.

Director Danny DeVito Back for 'True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle'

Danny DeVito / Charlotte Doyle

While the actor has kept busy in front of the camera in his series regular role on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," but Danny DeVito hasn't stepped behind the camera since directing the mediocre 2003 comedy Duplex starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore. However, THR now has word that he will return to the director's chair for an adaptation of the Newbery award-winning book The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Morgan Freeman and Pierce Brosnan are committed to play the two lead adult characters in the story of the titular young daughter of an aristocrat who has lived a very sheltered life.

Nike MAG 'Back to the Future II' Shoes Being Auctioned Off on Ebay

Nike MAG Shoes

The Nike MAG is no longer the "greatest shoe never made." The mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences in Back to the Future II (in 1989) is finally being released – and they're here to help create a future without Parkinson's disease. Following up our story just yesterday about the awesome shoes from BTTF2 finally being manufactured by Nike, they've just begun auctioning off a limited quantity of 1500 pairs on Ebay tonight (earnings will go to The Michael J. Fox Foundation). The only problem - they're going to be very expensive, and they're only selling 150 per day. But these are obviously must-haves!
