Russian Poster for 'The Thing' Shows Something Under the Arctic Ice

The Thing

Though I wasn't particularly impressed by the first trailer for The Thing, the prequel to John Carpenter's classic horror film of the same name, the red band trailer certainly got my attention a little better. The teaser poster for the film wasn't really anything special to behold but this new Russian poster for the film is pretty damn cool. Rather than focusing on the creature itself or any of the bloody deaths that will surely fall upon the doomed research team, it merely showcases quite a large overhead shot of a crevasse in the ice harboring the huge craft that the titular monster used to arrive on our planet. See the cool poster below!

Zemeckis Lands John Goodman for 'Flight' with Denzel Washington

John Goodman

Earlier this month we learned that Sherlock Holmes actress Kelly Reilly had landed her biggest role yet as the female lead in Flight, the film marking director Robert Zemeckis' return to live-action filmmaking with Denzel Washington as his lead actor. The story follows a commercial airline pilot named Whip Whitaker who is hailed as a hero after landing a malfunctioning plane that was close to crashing. However, an investigation into the cause of the crash actually reveals he was flying under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Now Deadline has word that John Goodman has joined the cast of this promising drama.

Watch: Midnight is Coming in Theatrical Trailer for 'New Year's Eve'

New Year's Eve

It's not even Halloween yet, let alone October, but that doesn't mean it's too early to promote the holiday-specific ensemble romantic comedy New Year's Eve with a whole slew of stars such as Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Lea Michele and Abigail Breslin and many, many more. With so many celebrities, each of them will only get about 10 minutes of screentime, but director Garry Marshall seemed to pull that off well in Valentine's Day (at least to warrant this unofficial sequel), but this new trailer via Apple should still get the ladies excited for a winter date this holiday season.

Watch: Full French Trailer for Action-Thriller Favorite 'Sleepless Night'

Sleepless Night Trailer

Nuit Blanche! I usually prefer to wait until a trailer comes out that actually has subtitles, but because this is one of my favorite films of the year, I'm posting this anyway. Twitch has put up an official French theatrical trailer for Frédéric Jardin's Sleepless Night, the action-thriller that we raved about after seeing at TIFF a few weeks ago. Even though this is in French and does not have English subtitles (yet), it's worth watching to get an idea of the action and intensity and why this is a must watch as soon as it does hit US theaters. It's already getting a remake, but this is the original that's definitely worth watching as soon as possible. Enjoy!

IMDb Launches Nifty Movie & TV Trivia iOS App Called IMDb Trivia

IMDb Trivia

Think you know your movie trivia? Think you know more than your friends? Put it to the test on the new IMDb app that just launched this week called, simply, IMDb Trivia. The app itself is a free download on the iTunes store but it also has in-app purchasable question packs if you want more. The app is actually very well designed and has random trivia questions for movies, TV and everything in-between, with various game types beyond just multiple choice. If you're a die-hard movie fan and an iPhone/iPad owner (like myself), you definitely need to download this, as you might get addicted and play it non-stop through the weekend.

Trouble in the 3D World? Sony to Stop Paying for Free RealD 3D Glasses

RealD 3D Glasses

While there are many issues with 3D nowadays, I believe one of its downfalls will be the glasses. While everyone has been hoping that technology will advance to the point where we won't even need glasses at all, in the meantime, 3D providers have tried everything from $100 designer glasses to throwaway freebies to special collector's editions. However, in the US at least, no one has to actually pay for glasses to see a 3D movie. While there's a premium price for 3D, which usually covers the cost, that might be about to change as Sony is putting their foot down and saying they'll no longer pay for RealD glasses (the "throwaway" kind).

Universal Hires Original Writers to Move Forward on 'Wanted' Sequel

Wanted

Back in 2009 there were plenty of rumblings that a sequel to the 2008 comic book adaptation Wanted was finally coming together. Chris Morgan was previously said to be working with Michael Brandt and Derek Haas again for the sequel, and even though Timur Bekmambetov was looking to shoot the film imminently, it just never came together. Well, now The Wrap reports Universal has brought in Brandt and Haas again to script the sequel in what I would assume to be a fresh start for the script. However, as of now, it's not clear who will end up directing the film as Haas says Bekmambetov is "a busy guy." Read on!

Susan Sarandon Joining Dwayne Johnson for the New Thriller 'Snitch'

Susan Sarandon

She's a stone cold fox. He's The Rock. THR reports Susan Sarandon has joined Dwayne Johnson for the new action-thriller Snitch. The film, which comes from stuntman turned writer and director Ric Roman Waugh (Felon, In The Shadows), is based on a 2004 episode of PBS' Frontline entitled "The Plea." The film will tell the true story of a suburban father (Johnson) who goes undercover to take down a high-level drug dealer in exchange for a reduction on his son's 30-year prison sentence. Sarandon will play an attorney working with Johnson's character who's looking for a big drug bust to further her career.

George Clooney Lists His 100 Favorite Films Between 1964 and 1976

George Clooney

Though he's only directed a handful of films like Leatherheads, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and a personal favorite of mine, Good Night and Good Luck, it's pretty much a guarantee that I'll always pay attention when George Clooney gets behind the camera. That's why I'm extremely excited for The Ides of March hitting theaters on October 7th, and now I'm pleased to present what might be the secret to Clooney's success as a filmmaker. Over at Parade magazine, Clooney listed his 100 favorite films between the years 1964 and 1976, a period which he believes is "the greatest era in filmmaking by far.” See the list below!

Fantastic Fest Awards Include 'A Boy And His Samurai' & 'You're Next'

Fantastic Fest - You're Next

It's already over? Fantastic Fest 2011, held in Austin, TX at the Alamo Drafthouse, is coming to a close in the next few days. To wrap-up the fest, they've announced this year's Fantastic Fest Awards, ranging from Audience favorites including Adam Wingard's highly buzzed about You're Next and Yoshihiro Nakamura's A Boy And His Samurai, as well as jury prizes for just about everything, from AMD & Dell's "Next Wave" Spotlight to Horror and Fantasy prizes as well. There are well over 100 films playing here, mostly obscure, foreign titles, or genre films, but these awards should be a guide for what to keep an eye on from this fest.

Lars von Trier Gets His Own Solo 'Melancholia' Poster in This New Set

Melancholia Posters

Enjoy it while it lasts. Someone out there was listening to my rants about the lackluster posters for Lars von Trier's Melancholia. A new set of character posters for the indie drama have been released via Empire, and there are five for the main characters in the movie, and one for Lars von Trier himself. Yes, von Trier, persona non grata from Cannes, gets his own character poster, complete with his personalized stamp in the corner. There's also individual posters for Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, John Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and Alexander Skarsgård. I really like this series, these are actually good - check them out!

Interview: '50/50' Director Jonathan Levine on Comedy & Filmmaking

Director Jonathan Levine

One of my personal favorite filmmakers on the rise is Jonathan Levine, director of lost horror All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and the upcoming 50/50. I first discovered Levine at Sundance in early '08 seeing his film The Wackness, my favorite of the festival that year, and have kept in touch with him since. His latest film, the "cancer comedy" 50/50 (watch a trailer) starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen, is a departure for him, at least a departure stylistically, but it's still a great film. I spoke at length on Skype with Levine a few weeks ago about adventures in filmmaking and directing one of the year's best comedies.
