Disney Extending Limited Theatrical Re-Release of 'The Lion King 3D'

The Lion King

After edging out Moneyball this past weekend to take the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row, Disney has decided that it might be a good idea to extend the limited theatrical engagement of The Lion King 3D which has grossed over $61 million since hitting theaters on September 16th. According to EW, the Disney will be keeping the box office champion in theaters for a little bit longer, but the details are still being ironed out. With the classic getting released on Blu-Ray for the first time on October 4th, the film will likely only get one more week in theaters, but if it keeps raking in the dough, it could be longer.

Julianne Hough & Russell Brand Set to Lead Diablo Cody's Next Film

Julianne Hough / Russell Brand

The two will be seen together in Adam Shankman's adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, but now British comedian Russell Brand (Arthur) and singer/dancer turned actress Julianne Hough (Footloose) are set to star in the next project from Juno writer Diablo Cody. The untitled film will also mark the screenwriter's feature directorial debut as she works from a screenplay she also wrote herself. Mandate Pictures made the announcement today, and this marks their third collaboration with Cody after the success of Juno and the forthcoming film Young Adult which she wrote for director Jason Reitman.

Ayelet Zurer Playing Superman's Kryptonian Mother in 'Man of Steel'

Ayelet Zurer

Back in June we had learned that Julia Ormond, who was most recently seen in the Emmy winning TV movie Temple Grandin and the Sundance selected The Music Never Stopped, had snagged the role of the Big Blue Boy Scout's Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van in Man of Steel. Well, while the film is in the middle of production, a last minute casting change has taken place as Deadline reports Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer, who has been seen in Angels & Demons and Munich, will star opposite Russell Crowe as Superman's birth mother. No reason has been given for the change, but Zurer starts filming this week.

This Time 'Puss in Boots' is Cool as The Cat Your Cat Could Act Like

Puss in Boots

While the marketing for The Muppets is pretty much taking the cake for the best promotional campaign this year, the team behind Puss in Boots is putting in some decent effort as well. We've already seen a viral ad making our feline hero out to be The Most Interesting Cat in the World after the popular ads for Dos Equis beer, but now he's become The Cat Your Cat Could Act Like in a new viral video parodying the funny Old Spice ads featuring Isaiah Mustafa. If the movie contains some of the cleverness that went into these ads, then maybe this spin-off could be better than the later Shrek films. See the entertaining video below!

Must Watch: Teaser Trailer for Don Coscarelli's 'John Dies at the End'

John Dies at the End Teaser Trailer

"Nothing your seeing is real." Time for a little trippy horror fun. Not long after debuting preview footage at Fantastic Fest, the first full teaser trailer for Don Coscarelli's new film John Dies at the End has debuted on their official website tonight (via AICN). This indie horror/fantasy/comedy stars Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes, and also includes Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Doug Jones. I really think this does look quite fantastic, and very weird, but mostly just awesome. If you're still confused by what's going on, there's an interview with the real David Wong on Cracked.com that explains. Have fun!

Fantastic Fest: Don Coscarelli Previews 'John Dies at the End' Footage

John Dies at the End

Are you ready to taste the new Soy Sauce? Last night at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX, just before a showing of Penumbra, filmmaker Don Coscarelli (of Phantasm, The Beastmaster, Survival Quest, Bubba Ho-Tep) introduced an exclusive first look clip and early look at the teaser trailer for John Dies at the End, his crazy new horror film that he already shot late last year. He's still editing and finishing, but as a first look it was quite wild, and Soy Sauce is definitely a key component. Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown and Doug Jones all co-star in the film, which I could describe as a drug-induced, throwback horror, mind-trip thriller.

Fantastic Fest Audio Reviews: 'Kevin' & Adam Wingard's 'You're Next'

You're Next

Hello again! Tim from The Golden Briefcase with your Fantastic Fest 2011 Day 3 audio reviews! We saw quite a few great films but we primarily wanted to bring you word on We Need to Talk About Kevin and Adam Wingard's You're Next. The former is the new film from Lynne Ramsay about Tilda Swinton & John C. Riley's born-evil son Kevin, played by Ezra Miller. You're Next is the new film from the team behind last year's Fantastic Fest champion, A Horrible Way to Die, and puts an awesome spin on the home invasion horror sub-genre. Both films were very highly anticipated by everyone at the fest and I think it's safe to say

Fantastic Fest Review: Alexandre Bustillo/Julien Maury's Horror 'Livid'

Livid Review

It's always exciting to see a fresh take on something you've witnessed before, when a filmmaker—or in Livid's case, filmmakers —toys with mythology, concocts a clever way of expressing that vision, and scares you senseless with what they've crafted. For Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, that fresh take on an old concept was done near flawlessly with the 2007 home invasion movie À l'intérieur (Inside). With Livid, they do it again, but the great thing about this is you don't even know going in what old clothes they're taking out of the wardrobe to dust off and make presentable again. Nor will I be revealing what that idea is.

Indie Trailer Sunday: 'Chillerama' Drive-In Anthology Horror Movies

Chillerama Official Trailer

Delight in the Depravity! In honor of Fantastic Fest, the premiere genre film fest, taking place in Austin this weekend, today's indie trailer is for an anthology horror cult feature called Chillerama. You may have heard of this already, as it features four rare never-before-seen prints of films by: Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City), Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs), Adam Green (Frozen), and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2), or rather, four awesome throwback drive-in horror cult classics, directed by each of those four directors. This looks like a lot of old school horror fun, and there's a nifty poster to go along with it. Highly suggest viewing!

First Poster for Christian Bale in Zhang Yimou's 'The Flowers of War'

The Flowers of War Poster

What's that odd look on your face, Mr. Bale? The first official poster, in Chinese, for Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War has been posted over on our friend's blog RecentMoviePosters. Originally titled Nanjing Heroes or 13 Flowers of Nanjing, this true life tale stars Christian Bale as an American trapped amidst the chaos of battle in 1937 during the Nanking Massacre, when Japan's army overran China's capital city. While the color on the rest of the poster is quite alluring, I have no idea why they chose Bale with that facial expression, but it's a film we're keeping a close eye on coming up, so I wanted to feature the poster anyway.

Fantastic Fest Review: Julian Gilbey's Thriller 'A Lonely Place to Die'

A Lonely Place to Die Review

A group of mountaineering friends come across an awful discovery, a young girl buried in the ground with only bottled water and a breathing tube for air, high up in the Scottish Highlands. As human sympathy naturally kicks in, they take the girl with them hoping to get her safe off the mountain. However her captors soon return, and a chase begins. This simple premise is what sets up Julian Gilbey's A Lonely Place to Die, a taut and engaging idea that sadly ends up creating too many forks in its own road. The idea, the intensity, of having to traverse a mountainous area with a little girl in tow would be thrilling enough.

'RoboCop' Director José Padilha Wants Fassbender for His Remake

RoboCop / Michael Fassbender

There's a story going around right now that includes some quotes from Brazilian director José Padilha talking about some of his ideas and plans for the upcoming RoboCop remake, which he took over earlier this year once Aronofsky was off. The quotes are translated via Bleeding Cool from a Brazilian interview in Portuguese (here) that has Padilha talking about who he wants to star - Fassbender, Michael Fassbender, is the name he mentions. "I'd like to talk to him — I'll talk to him," Padilha says. "There's a possibility... and there's a lot of other great actors that would play RoboCop." Obviously these are just hopes and speculation.
