Sony Pictures Lands Movie Rights to 'Assassin's Creed' Video Games

Assassin's Creed

The subsidiary Screen Gems already has their own video game franchise with Resident Evil still alive and kicking, but now Sony Pictures is ramping up another video game adaptation for the big screen. Variety has word that the studio is closing a deal to adapt the popular Assassin's Creed video game series into a feature film franchise. Other studios had been vying for the property when Ubisoft started shopping it around Hollywood over the past several months, but Sony Pictures came out on top. The timing couldn't be better with the fourth game, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, hitting shelves on November 15th. Read on!

WB Gives Collet-Serra's 'Akira' the Greenlight, Hedlund Now Top Pick

Akira

Are you ready for Garrett Hedlund to ruin another beloved sci-fi classic? Out of nowhere tonight, Variety reports that Warner Bros has given their live-action Akira adaptation the greenlight. But I can no longer call it big budget or an epic re-adaptation, as it's been shrunk down to a modest $90 million budget and presumably only one film, instead of two. At the helm, since Book of Eli's Albert Hughes dropped off earlier this year, is Spaniard Jaume Collet-Serra, director of Orphan and Unknown, both for WB. The project is now aiming to start shooting early next year around February/March. There's a casting tidbit in there, too.

Kenneth Branagh Set to Direct 'Italian Shoes' Adaptation in Sweden

Kenneth Branagh

Branagh is heading back behind the lens. Variety reports that a Swedish production company called Yellow Bird (filmography), also partnered with Left Bank Pictures, is developing an adaptation of Swedish author Henning Mankell's novel Italian Shoes. Now set to direct is Kenneth Branagh, taking him back to his more dramatic roots following working on Thor. There's some extra buzz behind this, because Yellow Bird is the company the last adapted The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in Sweden first, and this is another high profile project for them. Branagh also worked on Henning Mankell's Wallander series for the BBC before.

Matt Damon to Direct and Star in a Drama Written with John Krasinski

Matt Damon

Though we initially heard that actor Matt Damon was looking to make his feature directorial debut with a film called Father Daughter Time, it looks like he'll be getting behind the camera with a different project. Variety has word that Damon will not only direct a new untitled drama set up at Warner Bros., but he also co-wrote the film with "The Office" and It's Complicated star John Krasinski, and both of the actors will also star in the film. The latter actor developed the idea with author Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) which looks to be a small budget feature somewhere around the $12 million range.

Watch: Crazy Red Band Trailer for 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas'

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas Red Band Trailer

Babes. Dudes. Sex. Violence. Drugs. What else do you expect? New Line/Warner Bros have released a brand new insanely crazy red band trailer on IGN for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, starring John Cho & Kal Penn once again, oh and don't forget Neil Patrick Harris, too. The first trailer was already ridiculous, but this time they take it to the extremes, since this is of course Harold & Kumar and it is a red band trailer so there's everything. Lots of naked babes, and dudes, sex, violence and copious amounts of drugs, as stated, and absurd stoner Christmas imagery galore. So have fun!

Last Unseen Film Starring River Phoenix Might Finally Get Released

River Phoenix

Director George Sluizer (the man behind both the original and American remake of The Vanishing starring Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland) has kept the final performance of the late River Phoenix under lock and key for quite awhile. That is until now. The Dutch director of Dark Blood, who hid the footage of the film after Phoenix tragically died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 with only 11 days left in production, has stated that he has since re-edited the film with plans on releasing it next year. However, Phoenix's performance will need some ADR, a task that will use the voice of Joaquin Phoenix to help.

Must Watch: Trailer for Landis & Trank's 'Chronicle' Superpowers Film

Chronicle Trailer

"There's nothing stopping us." Holy crap this looks good. Fox has debuted the first official trailer on MTV for Chronicle, a faux-documentary style found-footage flick following three high school friends who gain superpowers from a mysterious substance they find, and the repercussions that arise when they use those powers. This almost feels like a YouTube video come to life, and it makes you go "whoa" the first time you see it, but it looks very impressive and realistic. The cast includes Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell and Dane DeHaan, and is the co-creation of Max Landis & Josh Trank. You've just GOT to see this trailer!

Mark Romanek the Top Choice to Direct 'The Lost Symbol' Adaptation

Mark Romanek / The Lost Symbol

Did anyone think it would take long to see this adaptation get underway, especially considering it's mostly set around Washington DC? Deadline reports that after doing interviews, a new name has hit the top of the list for Sony/Columbia's adaptation of Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol, the next thriller starring Robert Langdon, played previously by Tom Hanks. While Ron Howard has decided not to come back for another, instead it's Mark Romanek (of One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) who's been dabbling with a few other projects including A Parking Ticket and Disney's Cinderella, that is now their alleged top choice for the job.

After the writing duo of Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg ("The Office") and director Jake Kasdan (the Orange Country director above) turned the $30 million R-rated comedy Bad Teacher into a hit summer comedy that raked in $215 million worldwide, it's no surprise that Sony Pictures wants to get the trio back together again for another project. Michael Bay Says He's Not Involved with New 'Transformers' Sequels

Michael Bay

This week the Transformers news has been all over the place with talk of back-to-back sequels coming without Shia LaBeouf starring, but with director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg reportedly already in talks for the two films. However, now the franchise filmmaker has spoken out about the recent news and it sounds like Hasbro and Paramount Pictures might have a problem. On the Shoot for the Edit message boards (via Collider), Bay himself says, "I am currently not talking to Paramount on T4 and T5 despite reports. I’m looking at a lot of possibilities coming my way right now weighing options."

'The Dark Knight Rises' Prologue is Attached to 'Mission: Impossible 4'

The Dark Knight Rises

Oh this is awesome! SlashFilm is reporting, and we've confirmed with our own sources, that a 6-minute prologue for Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises will be showing in front of IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol this December. If you recall, it's opening in IMAX a few days early starting December 16th. This is a repeat of Warner Bros' showing the opening bank robbery prologue from The Dark Knight in front of I Am Legend in IMAX in late 2007. We can expect this to be shot and shown in IMAX just like that, which sounds amazing, as that was one of the most thrilling parts about the early lead-up to TDK.
