Comedian and Actor Patrice O'Neal Tragically Passes Away at Age 41
More sad news comes this week after the passing of Ken Russell over the weekend. Now Reuters has word that comedian and actor Patrice O'Neal has passed away far too young at age 41. O'Neal had recent suffered a stroke back on October 19th, and today his agent Matt Frost said, "It is with terrible sadness we must report that Patrice O'Neal has passed away this morning due to the complications of the stroke he suffered." Though most of O'Neal's work can be found in his countless stand-up sets and TV appearances on late night talk shows with Conan O'Brien and David Letterman, he also left his mark on several films.

Watch: Subtle New Red Band Spot for Steve McQueen's 'Shame' Hits
"You wanna get out of here? I could take you somewhere..." In anticipation of its limited opening (theaters here) this weekend, Fox Searchlight has unveiled very subtle, but certainly seductive, new red band spot for Steve McQueen's Shame, starring Michael Fassbender as a sex addicted guy living in New York City. We've already featured numerous trailers for this, including one that only had Carey Mulligan singing, but obviously the red band nature of this plus the NC-17 rating the film has received (and is trying to defeat) will definitely attract more viewers. Listen carefully to the trailer and don't watch at work, you know better!

Indie Spirit Awards 2012 Nominees, 'The Artist' & 'Take Shelter' Lead
The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they won't necessarily be receiving at the Oscars - though I hope not this time. The nominees for the 27th annual Film Indie Spirit Awards were announced today (via their website), and can be seen below. J.C. Chandor's Margin Call was selected to receive the annual Robert Altman Award, bestowed upon a film's director, casting director and its entire ensemble cast. The winners will be announced on February 25th, 2012 at the ceremony in Santa Monica.

Watch: Kees van Dijkhuizen Looks at the Films of Christopher Nolan
The year is almost over which means skilled editor and cinephile Kees van Dijkhuizen only has two more filmmakers to showcase before his video series comes to an end. We've only just pointed out the retrospective videos magnificently highlighting directors like Tim Burton and Ridley Scott, and now our attention turns to one of the most high profile directors of the decade: Christopher Nolan. Though his filmography is significantly smaller than most featured directors (only 7 films to his name), with titles like The Dark Knight, Memento and Inception among them, he deserves the recognition. Watch below!

George Miller Plans a Third New 'Mad Max' and Animated 'Fur Brigade'
About a year and a half ago, we learned that director George Miller might have another sequel planned to follow Mad Max: Fury Road, the film that's been delayed for over a year now, but aims to go into production sometime next year. There were rumblings that he might shoot the films back-to-back, but it's more likely the studio will wait for the first film to hit the box office to plan sequels. However, Miller seems to be prepared if that ever happens as Australian Financial Review (via Bleeding Cool) profiled the filmmaker who revealed plans for a third new Mad Max sequel, and Fur Brigade, a new animated film.

Rumor: Production on 'The Wolverine' Sequel Might Be Delayed Again
Though the actor will be taking his musical talents to the big screen for the first time early next year with Tom Hooper's new adaptation of Les Miserables, it's been reported that Hugh Jackman would start work on the gestating sequel The Wolverine with director James Mangold shortly thereafter still in early 2012. However, it sounds like that after the delay caused by Darren Aronofsky's departure from the project, the film may yet again be on hold until later next year. Moviehole has word from one of their inside industry sources that some issue in Japan (though it's not clear what) may cause delay in starting production.

Kyle Chandler Joins Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe in 'Broken City'
Earlier this year, looking into a government cover-up in Super 8 took priority over coaching football for "Friday Night Lights" star Kyle Chandler (who finally earned an Emmy for his work on the final season of the series) and now the actor is moving into a different arena for his next project. Variety has word that Chandler has landed a role alongside Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg in Allen Hughes' political thriller Broken City. The film, written by new writer Brian Tucker, follows Wahlberg as a New York City detective hired by a powerful politician (Crowe) to identify his wife's lover, who is subsequently found and killed.

Universal Picks Up Rights to 'In the Garden of Beasts' for Tom Hanks
Next month audiences will get to see Tom Hanks in the better of his two films this year as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will likely blow Larry Crowne out of the water, but another adaptation has caught the actor's eye as a producer and maybe as a starring vehicle. THR has word that Universal Pictures has just picked up the feature film rights to Erik Larson's non-fiction book In the Garden of Beasts, the true story of William Dodd, the United States' reluctant and mild-mannered ambassador to Berlin in 1933, and his daughter Martha, a vivacious socialite who had romantic affairs with a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy.

Jason Reitman's 'Young Adult' Gets a Very Vulgar New Red Band Spot
Well, the quote I'd like to use, I can't really use. There's only so many words spoke in this is new "red band spot" via TrailerAddict for Jason Reitman's Young Adult. It's essentially 30 seconds of one of the climatic scenes in the later half of the film that shows just how much of a bitch Charlize Theron is—in the film, of course. This was written by Diablo Cody so it's not surprising to find dialogue like this being just thrown around. Fun stuff! My favorite scenes from the film involve Patton Oswalt, but he's nowhere to be seen in this. If you need to see a full-length trailer, there's a couple to choose from here. Meet angry Mavis below.

Simon West to Helm 'Dust & Glory' Car Racing Romantic Adventure
Are you ready for a "romance adventure" project (haven't heard that in a long time) wrapped in a car racing movie to be directed by the action filmmaker currently shooting The Expendables 2? THR is reporting that Simon West, who also directed Con Air, The General's Daughter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic and Nicolas Cage's Medallion, which was just retitled to Stolen, is in negotiations to direct the film Dust and Glory. Produced independently by Top Cat Media and Blue Star Ent., the story is set during the 1950s' REDeX trials, which covered over 10,000 miles of the toughest racing terrain in Australia, maybe the world.

Watch: First Teaser Trailer for Takashi Miike's New 'Ai To Makoto' Film
Ai To Makoto! Japanese genre legend director Takashi Miike is still on a roll, churning out film after film after film these days. Up next for him is Ai To Makoto, or The Legend of Love & Sincerity, apparently some adaptation of a manga that looks very... colorful. Twitch posted the first teaser trailer and while it's short, and features just a few quick glimpses of footage, it's considerably interesting, to say the least. Is this a musical? I'm not even sure, but apparently it's a love between two high school students. One, the troubled Makoto Taiga, is played by Satoshi Tsumabuki; and the pure, sweet Ai Satome is played by Emi Takei.
