Seth Rogen to Host the 27th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards
The end of last month brought the list of nominees for the 27th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards honoring the best in independent film, and now we know who will act as master of ceremonies and hand out the awards on February 25th in Santa Monica. A press release from Film Independent has revealed that Seth Rogen (who stars in the nominated film 50/50) will try to bring the laughs on stage for the awards ceremony which will eventually be broadcast later that same day at 10/9c on IFC. Rogen has presented at various awards ceremonies before, but this will be his first time acting as host for an event.

Denzel Washington Now Attached as 'The Equalizer' in Sony's Movie
Some great casting news out of nowhere. In the latest Sony Pictures announcement (via ComingSoon) that they are extending its first look deal with production company Escape Artists, it was mentioned that one of the projects they are currently working on is The Equalizer, an adaptation of the 80's TV series. We've heard of the project before, as it had Paul Haggis writing at one point. But the report now mentions that Denzel Washington is attached to star with Richard Wenk (16 Blocks, The Mechanic, Expendables 2) on the script, and Variety has backed it up with confirmed casting that he's attached. Denzel is The Equalizer!

Watch: Superb 6-Minute Behind-the-Scenes of 'The Artist' Featurette
"Moviemaking can be an art form." The Weinstein Company has debuted an outstanding full six minute behind-the-scenes featurette (via Apple) for The Artist, the B&W silent film sweeping Hollywood. One of my favorite films of the year, The Artist (trailer) explores Hollywood's silent era, following an actor on the way out as "talkies" start to take over. The featurette includes interviews with the entire cast, endless clips, and some behind-the-scenes moments in the later half of them dancing their hearts out and shooting scenes (in color!). It's an excellent video that'll hopefully convince a few of you this wonderful film is worth seeing.

Fincher's 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Hits a Day Early, Tuesday Night
She's coming. Its been officially announced (via Deadline) by Sony/Columbia Pictures that David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will now be opening in theaters a day early, starting December 20th instead of the original release of December 21st. These are essentially early midnight showings of the dark, R-rated film, as they'll start showing Dragon Tattoo at 7PM nationwide on the Tuesday evening of the 20th, an exact week from today. It's a very crowded time for movies this holiday, and this might give them a slight advantage, at least with anyone very anxious to see this (and I highly suggest it). Feel bad this holiday.

Final 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' Poster Hits + Contest Finalists
Get ready to Ride! Don't worry, I made that tagline up on my own, they didn't actually use that. Columbia Pictures has unveiled in high res the final official poster (via SuperHeroHype) for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, seen below, along with the finalists in their poster design contest. Many readers have sent in photos of the final poster, as it's also a giant cardboard display seen in most movie theaters right now. As for these fan posters, I actually think some of these look better than the official one, at least the hand-drawn artwork. I'm still looking forward to seeing this, even though it got some dismal buzz at a recent screening.

Two New Official First Look Photos for Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby'
Well, Ms. Daisy Buchanan, don't you get around. Thanks to a tip via our friends at The Film Stage, we've got a brand new look at two official first look photos from Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, that's currently shooting in 3D down in Australia right now. Not that we haven't seen some good-looking set photos of the cast in this already, but these are two official shots and they do look quite good so far. Tobey Maguire stars as Nick Carraway, hanging out with Daisy Buchanan, played by Carey Mulligan, as well as Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Bring on the Fitzgerald!

Must Watch: Matt Shapiro's Outstanding '2011: The Cinescape' Recap
"This year's movies go to eleven." I know it's another one of these year end montages, but this is a good—no, a fantastic one—thanks to our old pal Matt Shapiro, aka oyguvaltshappy, who has been making these since the start, way back since 2006; we've been covering since 2007. 2011: The Cinescape recaps the year in film with some outstanding editing as well as excellent voiceover placement, making this one of that you just have to watch, it'll bring a big smile to your face. He hits nearly everything, even The Devil's Double and that anime Redline, plus anything in between, including Jack & Jill, but also Hobo With a Shotgun. Enjoy!

Watch: Senses Fail and Love Remains in Full 'Perfect Sense' Trailer
The beginning of the year brought our first look at the IFC Films release of Perfect Sense, a story of love as the human race faces an epidemic with people around the world inexplicably losing their senses one by one. Another trailer from across the pond showed up in September, but with the film's February release date looming closer, it's time for the official theatrical trailer to tantalizes your senses while you still have them. This trailer paints the film more as a viral thriller like Contagion, but at the core of the story is love trying to survive the end of the world as Eva Green and Ewan McGregor struggle to stay together. Watch below!

Must Watch: Evil Plots Are Afoot in First 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Trailer
"On my orders, the G.I. Joe's were terminated with extreme prejudice." It's only Monday, and this week is shaping up to be a big one for getting audiences pumped for 2012. The first trailer for Men in Black 3 hit this morning and now yet another sequel gets its first trailer with the unveiling of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the sequel that brings back only a few cast members like Channing Tatum from the original 2009 blockbuster and introduces new cast members like Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Ray Stevenson and Adrianne Palicki. If you're looking for more ridiculous action, this seems to be the film to see. Watch!

Check Out a Few Promotional Banners for 'The Amazing Spider-Man'
While the first official teaser poster for The Amazing Spider-Man looks a little bit dark for Marc Webb's franchise reboot starring Andrew Garfield as your favorite neighborhood wallcrawler, the footage at Comic-Con didn't necessarily imply a series darker than Sam Raimi's take, but rather a more grounded approach with a lingering focus on the characters' relationships. However, these new promotional banners that Comic Book Movie has discovered make it look along the same lines of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. Apparently these are meant to promote the film internationally, hence the flashiness. See them all below!

George Clooney & Grant Heslov to Tell the Story of Smothers Brothers
After collaborating as producing partners and occasionally co-stars on films like Good Night and Good Luck, The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Ides of March this year, George Clooney and Grant Heslov are teaming up again through their Smokehouse production banner to tell the story of Tom and Dicky Smothers, the iconic 60's comedians who brought controversial, topical and irreverent laughs to TV with "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman will write the film based on David Bianculli's book Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
