Chris Columbus to Adapt Anne Rice's 'Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt'
Filmmaker Chris Columbus has brought many a young hero to the big screen from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to Percy Jackson and the Olympians and some time with Kevin McCallister battling a couple Wet Bandits in Home Alone. With all that witchcraft, wizardry, mythology and paint bucket bashing in his past, Columbus has now found Jesus. Variety reports the filmmaker and his 1492 Pictures production banner and CJ Entertainment have picked up the feature film rights to adapt the Anne Rice novel Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, a story that follows a 7-year old Jesus learning about his birth and life purpose.

Zoe Kravitz & Sophie Okonedo Join Will & Jaden Smith in 'After Earth'
Just last week we learned that M. Night Shyamalan's gestating sci-fi project 1,000 A.E. seemed to be going solely by the title After Earth after the filmmaker himself talked about the project on Twitter. Though Heat Vision still refers to the project by the former title, that doesn't change the fact that the film has just gained two more cast members, regardless of the title. Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) will join the father-son duo of Will Smith and The Karate Kid star Jaden Smith in the story of a young boy and his father crash landing on Earth, 1,000 years after humans abandoned it.

Another New Philip K. Dick Adaptation - 'Now Wait For Last Year'
Hopefully this isn't another lame Philip K. Dick adaptation, like the've been recently. Variety reports that Lila 9th & Electric Shepherd Productions have optioned rights to adapt Now Wait For Last Year, a 1966 sci-fi novel by Philip K. Dick that describes a future where Earth has allied with an extraterrestrial species known as 'Starmen in their war against another species, the Reegs. Barrie M. Osborne (Lord of the Rings, Warrior's Way, The Great Gatsby), Cameron Lamb and PKD's daughter Isa Dick Hackett are producing. I always love the concepts in PKD's stories, they just haven't turned out great recently. Will this be different?

James Newton Howard Replacing Danny Elfman for 'Hunger Games'
Whoa! Usually when a composer like Danny Elfman has to step down from a project, the replacement isn't that great. This is a change! Variety says Elfman, who was going to score Gary Ross' The Hunger Games adaptation, has had to leave over scheduling, and instead James Newton Howard will be replacing him. Howard is the Oscar nominated composer of great scores like The Last Airbender, The Dark Knight, I Am Legend, Michael Clayton, The Village, Outbreak, The Fugitive (I could go on), and is a spectacular choice to provide the score for this movie anyway. I'm listening to some of his work now and it he'll work perfectly.

'The Time is Now' - Andy Serkis' 'Rise' Oscar Campaign Has Begun!
The Time is Now, rise up my simian friends and revolt! We heard that this was coming, but were waiting to actually see something. Although I'm not sure if this is just fan-made or not, SlashFilm has posted "one of the many versions of the Oscar ad" that Fox has started running for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, supporting Andy Serkis, who played Caesar by way of performance capture, for Best Supporting Actor. I can tell you right now I am all for this, he was fantastic in the film, making it one of my favorites and I think he deserves to be recognized. But will all this make a difference? We'll have to see. Ads & more links below.

Benicio Del Toro Out of 'Star Trek 2' But Khan May Still Be the Villain
Well the rumor mill just keeps on spinning as production on J.J. Abrams' sequel to his 2009 franchise reboot Star Trek looms closer. Initially, we heard Benicio Del Toro was up for an unknown villain role in the film, and more recently conflicting thoughts on whether or not Del Toro would play iconic villain Khan Noonien Singh have been dominating the conversation. Well, now part of that equation seems to have been canceled out as Vulture has learned that negotiations with Del Toro have broken down as the actor and the studio could not agree on payment amount. However, the rumblings over Khan's inclusion still persist.

Watch: Second Official Trailer for 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close'
"If things were easy to find... they wouldn't be worth finding." Warner Bros has debuted the second official trailer via Apple for Stephen Daldry's late season arrival Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel starring Tom Hanks and Thomas Horn as father/son. We've seen one U2-filled trailer for this so far, but this one has less U2 and more emotion, if you've got a heart you'll be choked up by the end, that's for sure. Max von Sydow and his Oscar-worthy silent hands-only performance are given a bit more time, so be on the lookout for that. "This is truly the most amazing thing."

Dwayne Johnson or Mark Wahlberg for Michael Bay's 'Pain & Gain'?
Over the summer, we learned that explosive director Michael Bay would finally get behind the camera for his relatively low budget dark comedy Pain and Gain, the story of a couple of steroid-abusing knucklehead bodybuilders from Florida who become criminals involved in an extortion ring and a kidnapping plot that all goes horribly wrong. Now Variety has word on the frontrunners to lead the film with Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, who both shared the screen briefly in The Other Guys, both being lined up. As of now Johnson's talks with Bay are further along with Wahlberg merely circling the film.

First Look: Andy Samberg & Rashida Jones in 'Celeste & Jesse Forever'
One of the first films on the Sundance 2012 line-up this year (just announced today) that I'm particularly excited about is Lee Toland Krieger's Celeste and Jesse Forever, a romantic comedy co-written by actors Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, starring both as well. The Playlist nabbed a few first look photos, four so far, from the independent film, produced by Team Todd & Envision Media Arts. The photos show Andy Samberg as Jesse and Rashida Jones as Celeste, a divorcing couple trying to maintain their friendship while they pursue other people. I'm sure it'll be a lot funnier than that sounds and we'll see more than this.

Hans Zimmer Talks 'Outrageous' New Sound for 'Dark Knight Rises'
Last month, famed composer Hans Zimmer, the man behind the scores for films like Inception, Sherlock Holmes, Gladiator and more, put out a call to anyone who wanted to be a part of his work on The Dark Knight Rises, the anticipated conclusion in Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise. The call was looking for thousands of voices for some sort of chant that will be integral to the score of the film. Recently, Collider sat down with the composer who opened up a bit about that idea as well as the sound crafted for the high profile sequel, a sound that Zimmer calls "ambitious," somewhat "experimental" and even "outrageous."

Martin Scorsese Revives Adaptation of 'Silence' for His Next Project
Nearly three years ago, there were rumblings that director Martin Scorsese (who has the fantastic film Hugo in theaters right now) would take on an adaptation of Shusako Endo's novel Silence, the story of missionaries in 17th Century Japan, with Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio del Toro attached to star. The project hadn't made any progress since then, but in a recent interview on Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s Radio Five show (via Bleeding Cool), Scorsese said he's actually looking to take on the film as his next project. That might mean his confirmed adaptation of The Snowman is likely on the backburner now.
