Anthony Mandler / Zac Efron

Last July we found out that Zac Efron would be continuing to broaden his horizons as an actor by starring in the thriller Die in a Gunfight which appeared on the 2010 Black List. At the time no director was attached, but now we have someone to helm the project. Deadline reports music video and commercial director Anthony Mandler will make his feature directorial debut with this story about Ben (Efron), an underachieving, deadbeat son of a famous New York high-society attorney who gets himself in over his head when he falls for the daughter of his father's nemesis, a girl who is already busy being stalked by an obsessive French professor.

Usually I'm apprehensive about music video and commercial directors moving to feature films, but Mandler's quite the accomplished director. He's helmed music videos like Run This Town by Jay-Z, Stop and Stare by OneRepublic, over a dozen music videos for Rihanna including her most recent hit Only Girl (In the World) and many more. Looking at those music video's it's clear the guy knows what he's doing behind the camera and has the visual style to take on a thriller like this and make it good. And with a script from Gabriel Ferrari and Andrew Barrer that appeared on the Black List just after they graduated NYU, I think that makes it even more intriguing.. At least that's what I'm hoping. What do you think?

This just might surprise us. Efron is pretty decent and a film like this could shut the hate down.
