Towards the beginning of this year, we reported that Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann would reprise their Knocked Up roles as Pete and Debbie respectively for a spin-off project focusing on the married couple. The project is also the next movie from Judd Apatow (Mann's husband in real-life) with a release already slated for June 1st, 2012, but we still don't know much about the project itself. But in speaking to Screen Junkies, Apatow said, "It’s really about where Pete and Debbie are five years later." Keep reading to hear about the inspiration behind the project and who else we might see from Knocked Up coming back for this.
Here's what Apatow had to say about why he's revisiting these characters:
People were really taken by those characters. I think people really emotionally connected to the challenges of their marriage and I thought, you know, they were only a small portion of the movie. I’m a television writer so I always want another episode. I always want another 80 episodes. That’s why after 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' we said, 'What else can we do with this character Russell Brand has created here?' I felt that way about Pete and Debbie from 'Knocked Up.'
Frankly, I was surprised that Get Him to the Greek worked out so well, but that was definitely one of my favorite comedies from 2010. My only wish was that a couple characters from Forgetting Sarah Marshall (where Russell Brand's character Aldous Snow originated) would have showed up for cameos. As for seeing these types of appearances from the characters of Knocked Up, Apatow definitely has them in mind. He says, "I’m trying to figure out how to do that. A lot of it just depends on people’s availabilities and the story I’m trying to tell, who fits into that story. There definitely will be other people from Knocked Up in the movie." That's definitely some good news. As someone who's always looking forward to the next Apatow movie, 2012 can't get here soon enough. What do you think?
