Asa Butterfield

Now here's some interesting casting news! Deadline is reporting that Asa Butterfield, the 14-year-old star of Martin Scorsese's Hugo, has been offered the lead role of Ender in Gavin Hood's adaptation of the sci-fi novel Ender's Game. Butterfield was also in Nanny McPhee Returns and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and would play a boy trained in the future as a fleet commander. It seems like it's just an offer so far, but it's likely he'll take it. This is worthy of being mentioned as it also shows that they're casting this for a younger age, exactly from the book. And honestly, he's quite talented, and would make a great Ender if he goes for it.

Summit Entertainment is developing the Ender's Game adaptation, which is being produced by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman, along with Odd Lot's Gigi Pritzker and Linda McDonough, author Orson Scott Card, and Lynn Hendee. Digital Domain, the company behind most of the Tron Legacy visuals and Real Steel, are doing the effects for this film. Deadline mentions that Asa "was among several young actors who met for that Ender role, and signs look good that he’ll be the film’s star," but they don't include any other names. I would've liked to hear who else they were looking at, but I'm truly impressed they're casting this young and I honestly think Butterfield would do a great job. Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Rendition, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is directing from his own script, with an early March 2013 release date currently scheduled! Thoughts?

That's great. This should be another awesome book series come to life. It will fill the hole in my heart now that Harry Potter is done.

Really hope they capture the depth of the book in the film, I haven't seen any of the movies he's in, but so far I have faith this movie will work out well. Can't imagine Orson Scott Card letting it go any other way!

Gavin Hood? Director of that crap film, Wolverine? OMG. Pass.

Director of Tsotsi, which won best foreign film at the 05 Oscars. Anyone with half a brain knows that the studio took Wolverine out of his hands, reshot some stuff and then cut it to shit.

Ahhh! I'm so excited! I can't believe this is finally being made into a movie. I agree, Asa Butterfield looks like a good match for Ender. It broke my heart when I heard Card withdrew having the last movie being done because he was unsatisfied with the script...and I agree with John, this will also fill the hole Harry Potter left...I wonder if they'll do the rest of the EG series?
