Casting Tidbits: Wes Bentley, Cameron Diaz, Vince Vaughn & More
by Ethan Anderton
May 6, 2011
Every day, every hour, this very minute, perhaps, Casting Tidbits attempt to penetrate this castle's walls. But in the end, their greatest weapon... is you. First up, though we previously heard Woody Harrelson had been offered the role, Deadline reports Wes Bentley will play Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane, the man who created the brutal competition within the adaptation of The Hunger Games which pits teens from 12 districts in a televised battle to the death. Many young newcomers have been cast in the film, but Bentley is one of the few adults cast so far along with Elizabeth Banks taking a role as well. More casting below!
Second, Deadline reports Cameron Diaz will star in an adaptation of the how-to-book What to Expect When You're Expecting. Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine, Everybody's Fine) is directing the film which is being crafted as a romantic comedy in the same vein as Love Actually with five different couples dealing with the forthcoming arrival of a child in their lives. The book has been a staple amongst expecting couples having sold over 16 million copies, so hopefully screenwriters Heather Hach and Shauna Cross were able to weave a decent ensemble story around the book to bring in those readers to theaters.
Next, Deadline also has news that Vince Vaughn will join Bruce Willis and Rebecca Hall in Lay the Favorite, an adaptation of the gambling memoir of the same name. High Fidelity helmer Stephen Frears is behind the film which tells the story of Beth Raymor (Hall), a young woman who becomes involved with the guy (Willis) as he figures out how to gain an edge on the Vegas sports book system. Vaughn is going to play Rosie, a Long Island bookie that Raymor worked for previously.
Finally, Variety has word that "7th Heaven" star Stephen Collins has landed a role Bobby and Peter Farrelly's big screen adaptation of The Three Stooges. Earlier in the night, the article had said Collins would play the villain of the story, but Fox has since told the trade that he will simply be a character who shows up at the orphanage to adopt one of the stooges. Did someone spoil a plot point? Anyway, Collins joins an interesting cast that includes Jane Lynch and Larry David as a couple of nuns at the orphanage and Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos as Larry, Curly and Moe respectively. I really don't know what to expect from this flick anymore.
That's all for this edition of Casting Tidbits. Be sure to stay tuned for even more casting news on the way.
