Charlize Theron

A couple of news items related to Ridley Scott's Prometheus to cover today. First up, THR reports that Charlize Theron is now confirmed for a role in the sci-fi movie, putting her opposite Noomi Rapace, star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Michael Fassbender. That leaves two other lead roles still left to be cast. In addition, despite Scott himself saying that "the keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative", Fassbender spoke with MTV about the project, and told them that "there's a definite connecting vein" to Alien. Even more quotes below!

Fassbender, who also stars in X-Men: First Class, chatted with MTV briefly about Prometheus, in which all we know is that he will play an android. Here's what he tells them (video of his answer viewable beneath):

"Oh, absolutely. There's a definite connecting vein," Fassbender told MTV News. "You realize you're part of something else, but it's definitely in keeping with the old ones."

Although it explores other areas of that universe, it appears that Prometheus and Alien exist in the same space. For Fassbender, that connection was initially a bit overwhelming: "When I read it, I was like, 'Well, okay, another Alien. Where do you go with this idea?' And then I sort of read the script, and it's new, yet it's in keeping with the old traditions as well. But there's a whole new revelation within this film."

"The first 'Alien' [movies], they were thrillers," he continued. "Something's going on. It's creeping, it's sinister. Things are happening, it's building, [and there are] different sorts of intrigues and politics going on between the different relationships on board."

And if that's what we're going to get with Prometheus again, but with a modern story in a different universe from Damon Lindelof, then I cannot wait. "There's action in it," Fassbender adds, "but the intelligence is what struck me when I read it. It's more sort of like the original ones. There are things happening and building, and the intelligence of the first two-thirds of the film gets you ready for the action." Awesome. The more I hear about this, the better it sounds, I just hope Ridley can pull it off. Fox currently has Prometheus scheduled for June 8th, 2012, so we've got a while to wait, but it's got to be an exciting time, because I'm sure we're going to be hearing a lot more fantastic stuff like this from others involved in the upcoming sci-fi.

Check out the video of Fassbender talking with MTV below. Glad to see him finally getting some major roles!

I agree Alex, the more I hear about it the more I like. I like that it's intelligent. That to me was an integral role to the first 2 Alien movies. I don't think it will be in a different universe though. It seems more like it's in the exact universe that Alien takes place
  • sweet casting...stoked

Sounds promising. Liking the cast so far. But I'd love a straight answer: is there an "alien" in this movie? 😛

Scott's heart is not in this film. He intended for an Alien prequel and not an original taking place in the "Alien Universe". It may be a decent movie but it won't be the redeeming film that many and Ridley wanted On the upside, it shouldn't be another Aeon Flux

I can see how this film is laying the foundation for Alien by the meaning of Prometheus... In Greek mythology, Prometheus (Ancient Greek: Προμηθεύς, "forethought")[1] is a Titan, the son of Iapetus and Themis, and brother to Atlas, Epimetheus and Menoetius. He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals.[2] Zeus then punished him for his crime by having him bound to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day. His myth has been treated by a number of ancient sources, in which Prometheus is credited with – or blamed for – playing a pivotal role in the early history of mankind.

It looks to be an amalgamation of two scripts, Shadow 19 and Passengers. I am thinking it will feature the Space Jockey alien race prominently. From the scraps I can gather, I’ve put my own spin on how I perceive the plot going. This is just a hunch. A ship called Prometheus is sent to a barren and hostile planet called Erix. It’s visceral and biomechanical. The mission is to ready it for colonization. The noble indigenous population is expendable. They are tall. Tusken. Friendly. Noble. To quell the culling, the noble race utilizes the hostile environment by harvesting eggs from a biomechanical species which takes on attributes of its host form. It’s a species much like a lion and extremely vicious with a short lifespan. The noble race have learned to stay away from this deadly killer but use it now for defense. The crew of Prometheus are all wiped out. The noble race locate the origins of where Prometheus was sent from and send a ship full of harvested eggs, somewhat akin to a bomber, to destroy Earth. The pilot is exposed to one of the biomechanoid killers and never makes the journey, crashing onto a planet named LV426.
