Comedy Awards

Sure, the Oscars are coming up this month, but there's not much awards love for comedies when the season gets into full swing. Yes, the Hollywood Foreign Press pretends to give awards to comedies with their Best Musical or Comedy categories, but why is comedy lumped in with musicals? And when movies that are not musical or funny (The Tourist) get nominated, there's obviously a problem here. Well MTV Networks and Comedy Central have aimed to fix that with the 1st Annual Comedy Awards which will honor the best comedy films, actors, TV series, digital content and stand-up acts. Check out the list of nominations below!

Here are the film nominees only for the 1st Annual Comedy Awards (for everything else):

BEST COMEDY FILM:
Cyrus
Easy A
Get Him to the Greek
Kick-Ass
The Other Guys

BEST ANIMATED COMEDY FILM:
Despicable Me
Megamind
Shrek Forever After
Toy Story 3

BEST COMEDY ACTOR - FILM:
Russell Brand - Get Him to the Greek
Will Ferrell - The Other Guys
Zach Galifianakis - Dinner for Schmucks
Paul Giamatti - Barney’s Version
Jonah Hill - Cyrus

BEST COMEDY ACTRESS - FILM:
Tina Fey - Date Night
Anne Hathaway - Love & Other Drugs
Helen Mirren - RED
Chloë Moretz - Kick-Ass
Emma Stone - Easy A

BEST COMEDY SCREENPLAY:
Cyrus
Easy A
Hot Tub Time Machine
Kick-Ass
Tiny Furniture

BEST COMEDY DIRECTOR - FILM:
Jay Duplass & Mark Duplass - Cyrus
Will Gluck - Easy A
Adam McKay - The Other Guys
Matthew Vaughn - Kick-Ass
Edgar Wright - Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

I must say it's great to finally see Edgar Wright get some recognition for the overlooked piece of awesome that is Scott Pilgrim vs the World. And while major comedies like Kick-Ass and Hot Tub Time Machine got plenty of love too, it's nice that lower profile comedies like Cyrus and Tiny Furniture also received plenty of praise. If you want to check out the complete list of nominees (including for all web and television comedy series) head on over to Comedy Central Insider. The Comedy Awards will air Sunday, April 10th simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land & VH1. What do you guys think of the nominees?

this is a joke i mean most of the comedy movies this year were pretty bad. this going to be a dumb awards show that nobody is going to watch probably
  • Ivan
I don't know why people are calling this a joke. Comedy does not get enough recognition. Sure, this may have been a dud year in ways, but there is a large comedy scene, especially in the digital content & stand-up realm. Comedy has an important place in film & television, so why not give out a few awards for it. As for comments like 'nobody is going to watch', i'm sure they can conjure up a few comedians to put together an entertaining show.

annoying, whats with all the East A shit? i thought this was "the comedy awards", not the "movies that made you want to throw your own feces in your own face awards"

Scott Pilgrim is "an overlooked piece of awesome?" Not even close.
  • Nate
Yikes....people are pretty sensative about things.
  • ?????
I'm shocked they haven't done this sooner.
