Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway

At the end of August, a rumor came about that Anne Hathaway might be joining Hugh Jackman in the new big screen adaptation of Les Miserables from The King's Speech director Tom Hooper. It was said she would take the lead female role of Fantine in this new version of the beloved, classic musical, beating out actresses like Rebecca Hall and Amy Adams, now Deadline has confirmed that the Alice in Wonderland and Rachel Getting Married star has finally closed her deal to star in the film. Even Jackman himself was pushing for Hathaway to snag the role, and that may have been what brought about the final decision.

Hathaway has yet to take on a straight-up musical, but she joins other talent like Russell Crowe who are in the same boat. Other cast members include Helena Bonham Carter, but the roles like Thenardier and Eponine and Cosette still need to be cast though names have been previously mentioned for the roles. Obviously Hathaway can sing as was proven at the Oscar ceremony, and she actually belted the tune On My Own, a song from this very musical (see the performance right here) when she hosted with James Franco. Otherwise, you can also see Hathaway and Jackman hamming it up on stage at the Oscars when the latter talent was hosting right here. This is a great cast, and I can't wait to see Hooper's take on the musical.

It will be interesting to see Hathaway tackle a dramatic role of this weight.  To go from a beautiful woman to a toothless, degraded prostitute is going to be quite a trip if Hooper goes with the harsher side of the novel.  This movie has the potential of being legendary.  I hope they pull it off.
    • Totally agree with you... Les Miserables is a great story with great characters.. so i hope thatHooper take all the sadness and hopeless  feeling from the novel and put it in a 3-hour film

    I think she'll make a fabulous Fantine. Can't wait.

I agree with Jamie- I will find it interesting to see Hathaway take the weight of the character. If she can do it, she'll be amazing! I find Hathaway may be too polished for Fantine, but that's where acting comes in. I really hope they cast the remaining roles right. I would love to see new faces as the younger cast. There are a couple auditions up on youtube. I would love to see what Haigan Day does with Cosette. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyPjII4ywaA She has such a lovely genuine quality that I think suits the character perfectly. Also, dye her hair and she could look related to hathaway. Any leads on eponine? There is another youtube audition up of another girl, but I don't think she has the character right. I really want this to be cast right! Lea Michelle's name keeps on being brought up, but I think she's too old now.
