Confirmed: Anne Hathaway Joining Hugh Jackman in 'Les Miserables'
At the end of August, a rumor came about that Anne Hathaway might be joining Hugh Jackman in the new big screen adaptation of Les Miserables from The King's Speech director Tom Hooper. It was said she would take the lead female role of Fantine in this new version of the beloved, classic musical, beating out actresses like Rebecca Hall and Amy Adams, now Deadline has confirmed that the Alice in Wonderland and Rachel Getting Married star has finally closed her deal to star in the film. Even Jackman himself was pushing for Hathaway to snag the role, and that may have been what brought about the final decision.
Hathaway has yet to take on a straight-up musical, but she joins other talent like Russell Crowe who are in the same boat. Other cast members include Helena Bonham Carter, but the roles like Thenardier and Eponine and Cosette still need to be cast though names have been previously mentioned for the roles. Obviously Hathaway can sing as was proven at the Oscar ceremony, and she actually belted the tune On My Own, a song from this very musical (see the performance right here) when she hosted with James Franco. Otherwise, you can also see Hathaway and Jackman hamming it up on stage at the Oscars when the latter talent was hosting right here. This is a great cast, and I can't wait to see Hooper's take on the musical.
