Damian Lewis and Hayley Atwell Join Ray Winstone for 'The Sweeney'
Over a year ago there were rumblings that big names like Tom Hardy, Daniel Craig and Ewan McGregor were being considered to star alongside Ray Winstone (The Departed) for a big screen adaptation of the classic British TV series The Sweeney. However, it sounds like none of those names have worked out since Baz Bamigboye reports the film is moving forward with Damian Lewis (from the new Showtime series "Homeland") and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger). Steven Mackintosh ("Luther") and Paul Anderson (Sherlock Holmes 2) will also star in the film from director Nick Love. More below!
The series followed two members of the "Flying Squad," a branch of the Metropolitan Police specializing in armed robbery and violent crime in London. Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter are the two lead roles, one of which has gone to Winstone, and the other belongs to Ben Drew (aka rapper Plan B). Meanwhile, Atwell is playing another detective who gets mixed up with the two officers. The roles for the other three actors have yet to be revealed, but any work for Lewis is good news. This will likely hit across the pond before it makes its way to the States, but I'm certainly interested in the project.
