Fox Searchlight Acquires Steve McQueen's 'Shame' for US Distribution

Steve McQueen's Shame

Oh hell yes! I had a feeling this might happen! One of our favorite indie distributors, Fox Searchlight, has taken a very bold move and acquired the controversial and provocative new film from Hunger director Steve McQueen titled Shame. I saw the film at the Telluride Film Festival (where the Fox Searchlight execs were too) and absolutely loved it (read my review), even though I didn't like Hunger much, but I felt that it needed a very brave, bold distributor who could actually give this film the push it deserves. So great to see that Fox Searchlight, who put out Black Swan and 127 Hours just last year, is the one picking this up.

Shame is directed by Steve McQueen, written by McQueen & Abi Morgan and stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. Fassbender plays a 30-something living in New York City who can't control his sex life and sexual desire, and things get thrown out of whack when his "fragile" sister moves in. "Steve McQueen’s courageous exploration of modern life's extremes is breathtaking. He has crafted an extraordinary film that probes some of the deepest and darkest issues ever portrayed on screen with amazingly gifted performances by Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan," said Fox Searchlight presidents Nancy Utley & Stephen Gilula.

"This is a brave statement and an important move by Fox Searchlight. I am very happy they came on board to release Shame in the U.S. It's great to be working with a team that is so passionate about cinema," said McQueen. I couldn't agree more and I'm very happy to include that statement from the press release, as I think it's a poignant statement from the director. The big question now is whether or not it will receive and NC-17 or R rating from the MPAA, and how they'll handle the rating at that point, however I gave quotes to my friends at The Film Stage saying that I think it was made to get an R. I can't wait for this to be released. We don't have an official date yet, but stay tuned as we'll definitely let you know when we do!

You can't imagine how disappointed I was to learn that Carey Mulligan is playing the sister of the sex addict.

Hey Alex this has nothing to do with Shame, but are you seeing the Morgan Spurlock comic con movie tonight?
    •  Yes, I saw it tonight, it's good, enjoyed it quite a bit! :) But please keep on topic, this is no place to discuss other TIFF films.

It'll get an NC-17. The MPAA is embarrassed by sexuality in movies. They love violence, however.

Love Fassbender. Him and Hardy are my favorite actors. I feel privileged to have met both and got to talk about their acting processes. I actually met Fassbender when Fish Tank was making its rounds in the festival circuit and I told him that he would be huge in 2 years, and voila...he was. Anyway, Alex....did you feel like the film suggested that Brandon and his sister had an incestuous past? When I read the screenplay, it seemed like that's what it was hinting at.

Hey Craig, what the hell is your problem with Carey Mulligan? She is an awesome talent and a charmer in person. I can't wait to see this film just to see her have a bit of fun with a wacky character.
