Gemma Arterton is One Half of 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters'
Though she played dreadful expository roles in films like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans, I'm still hoping Gemma Arterton might have something more to offer. She showed some humor in her brief appearance in Pirate Radio, and Michael Mann apparently sees something in her talent since she recently landed the lead female role in Capa, but she still has something to prove. Another high profile dark action movie might not be the best choice to show-off her acting chops, but Heat Vision reports the beautiful actress will play the sister half of the titular duo in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, a dark twist on the classic fairytale siblings.
Last time we heard anything about this project, Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) was said to be taking the role of Gretel. That news came from Jeremy Renner himself who is apparently still attached to the project as Hansel. Arterton not only beat out Rapace for the role but also Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) and Eva Green (who also lost her role in Capa to Arterton). In the story, we follow Hansel and Gretel some 15 years after that whole gingerbread house incident with the brother and sister known as famed witch hunters.
This strange twisted fairytale has quite a weird assortment of talent with Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola at the helm and none other than Will Ferrell and Adam McKay producing the project. Their excitement for the project came from the prospect of bringing a Shaun of the Dead/Evil Dead 2 sort of action/horror comedy to their production company. Once again, the two leads don't seem to offer much in the vein of comedy for this kind of project, but should have no problem with the action. Count me cautiously optimistic to see how this project turns out, especially since it's scheduled to shoot in the tight eight week period between Renner's turns in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Avengers. What do you think?
