Idris Elba Being Lined Up for Guillermo del Toro's Sci-Fi 'Pacific Rim'
Last month we saw him decked out in gold, in a role that should've been much bigger, as the all-seeing Heimdall in Marvel's adaptation of Thor, but now it sounds like Idris Elba will really get in on some action soon. The Wrap reports Elba is apparently the frontrunner for Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi flick Pacific Rim. No official deal is in place yet, but it sounds like Legendary Pictures is keen on having him alongside rising star Charlie Hunnam in a story set in a future in which an alien attack threatens the existence of earth and humans must battle the nasty and brutal creatures by piloting giant robots. Yep, it sounds quite awesome.
Elba is certainly an actor deserving of a major role in a big budget film like this, and I hope his involvement with Pacific Rim actually comes to fruition. However, there's also been rumors that he's in contention for a role in Quentin Tarantino's next film Django Unchained, of course Will Smith has also been linked to that, so we'll see what happens. Elba is currently working on another high profile sci-fi flick with a supporting role in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and we'll also catch a glimpse of him in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance at Comic-Con next month. Sounds like he's finally getting the roles and recognition he deserves.
