Jake T. Austin Joins Joel Courtney in 'Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn'
Just last week we learned that breakout Super 8 star Joel Courtney would follow his star-making turn in J.J. Abrams sci-fi flick with a journey into the past for an adaptation of Mark Twain's classic adventures of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. Courtney is playing Sawyer and now Variety reports "Wizards of Waverly Place" and Hotel for Dogs star Jake T. Austin is closing a deal to play Huckleberry Finn. Though the two leads have been cast, and we know Jo Kastner is directing the film, we're still not sure exactly what kind of mischief the infamous protagonists will find themselves in this time around. Read on!
The last time Tom and Huck got together it was in the aptly named Disney feature Tom and Huck with Jonathan Taylor Thomas and the late Brad Renfro playing the two troublemakers respectively. In that film, the two witness a graveyard murder and swear an oath of silence to protect their own lives. But their usual treasure hunting and Tom's budding friendship with his classmate Becky is threatened when the boys' silence threatens to allow an innocent man to hang for the crime, and Tom must choose between keeping his pact with Huck and justice for his friend Muff Potter. This could very well be the story for the new film, but we're not sure.
Courtney's casting was already enough to get me interested, and for Austin, an actor who has had plenty of experience on Disney, this could be a big breakthrough role for him as an actor. He's already had a solid career for the House of Mouse, not to mention some voicework on the kids' cartoon "Go, Diego, Go!" but this should really let him shine. We'll next see Austin in the pseudo-sequel New Year's Eve, the ensemble romantic comedy follow-up to Valentine's Day. As soon as we hear anything else significant on this project, we'll let you know.
