Jennifer Lawrence, Hailee Steinfeld and More Up for 'Hunger Games'
As a whole slew of the most coveted young actors in Hollywood like Shia LaBeouf and many more are in contention to lead The Bourne Legacy, there's another coveted role for even younger female actresses. EW reports that as of now, about 30 actress have either read or had meetings about taking the challenging lead role of Katniss Everdeen in Lionsgate's adaptation of The Hunger Games from director Gary Ross. Since the role requires some serious acting chops names like Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Chloë Moretz (Let Me In), and Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) are unsurprisingly in the running. But there's even more!
In addition, recently popular young Oscar nominated talents like Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) are also in the running for the role, as expected after those accolades. Other popular young actresses include Emma Roberts (Lymelife, Scream 4) and Emily Browning (from Sucker Punch). But aside from name talents, there's also lesser known actresses like Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass), Kaya Scodelario (UK's "Skins") and Shailene Woodley ("The Secret Life of the American Teenager").
If you're unfamiliar with the very popular series of books, here's the official synopsis for the first:
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
Depending on how this turns out, whoever takes the role in Hunger Games will also likely take on Catching Fire and Mockingjay, the other two installments of the book series that could be turned into moves as well. The age range here is rather significant from 14-year old Steinfeld up to 24-year old Fonseca. Personally, my vote is for Lawrence, simply because I'm looking forward to anything she has on tap for the future. Of course there are probably plenty more names in the running, so one of these young ladies may not even get the role. We'll do our best to keep you posted. Do you guys like any of these names for The Hunger Games?
