Jennifer Lawrence Officially Cast as Katniss in 'The Hunger Games'
Even though there were more than a few naysayers in the comments when we heard that Winter's Bone star and Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence was the frontrunner to take the lead role of Katniss Everdeen in the adaptation of The Hunger Games, no amount of complaining can stop it. The Wrap reports that Lawrence has officially landed the coveted role in Lionsgate's highly anticipated new franchise based on Suzanne Collins' best-selling book of the same name. The deal officially closed for Lawrence's casting on Wednesday and it's likely that the actress is signed for adaptations of all three books in the young adult novel series.
Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) will direct the adaptation, and now the next big role to be filled in the film is that of the lead male character Peeta. Josh Hutcherson and Alex Pettyfer have been mentioned as contenders and apparently "Weeds" star Hunter Parrish just recently had his name thrown into the mix too. This project is certainly a hot commodity in Hollywood right now, and you can bet we'll be hearing plenty more news as this project develops. I know some of you aren't too happy with Lawrence's casting, but the girl has talent, so let's cut her a break and see what she'll bring the the table. The Hunger Games will hit theaters on March 23rd 2012. Sound good?

I'm glad they went with her. Ultimately I just hope they don't try to film this to appeal to the Twilight crowd. For the love of all that is holy, please put some time and effort into this movie!

Agreed. Having heard about this adaptation I bought the audiobooks for the series and started listening on my way to work in the mornings. It doesn't sound like any sparkling beings are involved yet, so that's a good sign.

Also agree. She wasn't my first choice, but I'm glad they picked someone who can actually act. That gives me some reassurance. Can't wait for some screenshots!

Another win for "racebending."

so 5'8 ,curvy womanly bodied ,soon to be 21 , Jennifer Lawrence is suppose to play the small malnourished, likely 5'4, 16 year old ,olive toned skinned, katniss everdeen brilliant LOL just so you know her size is a big part of her character she is suppose to be small in the games she is underestimated due to her small figure she climbs trees to get away from the bigger compete tors who could'nt chase her up the trees because they were too big

I don't agree with this. But I vote Alex for Peeta. He'll play it perfectly.

Ugh! Alex Pettyfer looks thirty and is a totally wooden actor. Peeta is supposed to be sweet and charming, and not look like a model. Peeta is also supposed to be 16. He's pretty much the opposite of Alex Pettyfer. Matt Damon would be a more believable Peeta (he an Alex Pettyfer look about the same age). And no - I'm not suggesting Matt Damon would really be good - I'm saying that Alex Pettyfer is so wrong for the role that a 40 year old would be better.

I think that by going with a slightly older Katniss they're hoping that this will be a cross-over film that captures the adult market too. It's a good bet because it's gritty. Unfortunately, having older actors play the leads totally undermines one of the most powerful aspects of the books - that these are kids being put in this horrible kill-or-be-killed situation.

This is good news! But Pettyfer in the mix makes me nervous... whoever they cast as Peeta needs to be extremely likable.

They already screwed up this casting, they better not screw up Peeta by casting Alex Pettyfer. I agree with EVERYTHING HG has said. I've read the books, and I would have been happy with any actress in contention to play Katniss EXCEPT for Jennifer Lawrence. By casting her, it defeats the purpose. There are so many comments on the Internet about how fortunate this project is because they snagged Jennifer because she's is a great actress, but so is Hailee Steinfeld. Steinfeld's acting is just as good (maybe better, but that's my opinion, which I'm entitled to have) PLUS she is physically more similar to the character than Lawrence is. I've said this before, but if the studio picked Jennifer because of child labor laws, then they only screwed themselves over. They should have sucked it up and hired Steinfeld, who would have grown into the franchise anyway. By the time Mockingjay comes out, if it comes out, Hailee would be 17-18 - same as Katniss. Hopefully the studio knows what they're doing. tl;dr - I have a lot of feelings.

Nooooo!!! Katniss is suppose to have dark drown hair!! She better wear a wig. This movie is gonna suck and I loved the books!! Stupid casting people.
Haleynarnold on Mar 18, 2011
ok, so at least they casted someone who can act and not some disney princess, and who cares if she is older, the last book is heavy and casting some teenager is not going to suit this character so i think it is better casting someone a bit older

She is a great actress, but looks wise she is WAY off. Not liking this casting at all. As for Peeta, I agree Alex would be a bad choice, if for no other reason than more and more he appears to be a male diva and a bit off. The kid from "The Kids Are Alright" (can't think of his name) would be perfect.

Well see. I didn't like Steinfeld for the role either. She is too dark. I picture small, pale, dark hair. Like a young Anna Kendrick.
Jim on Mar 18, 2011
Except Katniss isn't pale!

Honestly I think they did a good job. As long as it wasn't some glamazon or God forbid Kristen Stewart, I was excited to see who it was going to be. She has the face for it but they'll definitly have to dye her hair. And I think it's better that she's older if they plan on making the rest into movies. Good job casting team!

I'm okay with this - not thrilled. But for the love of all that is good & holy in this world - do NOT cast Alex Pettyfer as Peeta!!
Teacherkid on Mar 21, 2011
PEOPLE! Have you read the books? They need people who are young! Old people don't fit the descriptions of the book! Not all movies are going to be like the books, but come on! Really? Katniss has LONG BLACK HAIR and she is SHORT! They need to think again -__-

Dear Hollywood God i pray im wrong. but it feels like you are about to take my favorite series, take the main character slot, A STRONG WOMANS ROLE, and cave her into a stupid hollywood persona blonde bombshell. i get it. you cant get a look alike who acts well. but my god shoot for the same ball park. no offense, but sorority models killing each other off isn't going to have anything similar to the effect of genuine real people, children, hunting each other down. If they don't take 99.9% of her sexy and trample it, this will not only be a horrible movie and a mockery of the novels' depth, but Ill never be able to read them again without getting mad. BOO! P.S i absolutely love Jennifer Lawrence as an actress normally but this just cements in my mind that hollywood is never going to accept an actress with an oddity about her (as that was exactly how katniss was portrayed) or unfortunately ever just let a story keep its depth without covering it in sexy. I say this because if an oddity actress cant even swing this role, which was wrote literally in her image, in awe of oddity, there isn't one out there she can. P.S.S. Jodelle Ferland would have been the best choice. Not only is she close to the character in age, appearance, a little ethnic, and nontraditional or stereotypical, she's an excellent actress. I wanted to see a new age ethnic powerhouse teen.

I would love it if they made this series R for violence. Not to make it more gory than the book - but to keep it as intense. The fact that fewer teen twilight girls would be able to attend is just an added bonus 😉
Jonesla1 on Jun 14, 2011
WTF You guys who are bashing Jennifer know nothing about acting or Hollywood. In Hollywood, 20 yr olds play teens. That's how it works. Hailee Steinfeld looks like she's twelve. And in case you don't know, she is NOT tiny. She's 5'7", around the same height as Lawrence. And Katniss is a stressed out girl, I would assume that she would look much older than she actually is.
