Jim Carrey Set to Face-Off Against Steve Carell in 'Burt Wonderstone'

October 11, 2011

Steve Carell / Jim Carrey

There was a bit of a shake-up this past April when the Steve Carell led comedy Burt Wonderstone lost director Charles McDougall. Then June brought news that TV director Don Scardino would sit in the director's chair for the story from the Horrible Bosses writing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein about rival Las Vegas magicians where Carell plays a magic man dethroned by a younger, hipper illusionist and then must find a way to rediscover his love for magic. Now Deadline has word Jim Carrey will be the man opposing Carell in the magic arena, though he was born the same year as "The Office" star.

Of course, this won't be the first time the comedic duo have gone head-to-head. In Bruce Almighty, the two were competing for the same news anchor position which resulted in some hilarious banter and a great on-screen rivalry. Sadly it also resulted in Evan Almighty a few years later, a comedy that fell flat on its face after going way over budget and wasn't nearly as funny as Bruce Almighty. Carrey's last effort resulted in Mr. Popper's Penguins which wasn't exactly the best return to comedy for the once shining funnyman, but maybe teaming with Carell can get him back on his A-game. What do you think?

In my head I'm trying to imagine a funny version of 'The Prestige' but this sounds like a great vehicle for both of them. Consider me interested.

I get a vision of Carrey asking "I can still play young and hip, can't I?" and all his people stood around him nodding furiously, all fixed grins and gritted teeth.
