'Killer Klowns from Outer Space' Getting a 'Requel' Sometime in 2012

On an unknown date in 2012, the Circus will return. Though there have been rumors all year long and even a few confirmations from the creators at various horror fests, we're just catching up with this story now. Word is there is another Killer Klowns from Outer Space movie coming, made by the same puppeteer team from the first one, the Chiodo Brothers. It'll also apparently be a "remake-sequel" mix, which they've dubbed a "requel", as stated at Screamfest in this YouTube clip. The sequel is already officially in the late stages of development, so the crazy clowns will definitely be back next year, and updates are still coming in.
While public details are still somewhat hazy, I did find an update from actor Grant Cramer (who played Mike Tobacco in the original) from June this year (via GeekTyrant) stating that, "We have a script and a commitment for all our funding but the money can't be spent until we have a distribution deal in place so that's where we are – talking to distributors." There's also an official Facebook page now up for the sequel/remake providing updates, including an August 25th post saying, "Great distribution meeting today! Stay tuned..." It sounds like things are coming along, so 2012 may indeed be the year they return, as stated in this first video tease, where it also hints the "Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space" will be in 3D.
The original Killer Klowns from Outer Space from 1988 is a camp, cult horror classic made by the Chiodo Brothers (Charles, Edward & Stephen), the only film they've written and directed, besides effects work. Reminiscent of 1950's sci-fi B movies, the plot has the earth invaded by aliens intent on using humans as a food source. But these aliens look like bizarre clowns arriving in a spaceship resembling a circus tent, and all their weapons are circus themed (popcorn bombs, silly string guns, etc). Cramer as Mike Tobacco will be back, and he hints he'll "be the mentor to the two new young leads that have to try save the world from the Klowns when they return." Stay updated on Facebook and we'll let you know when we hear more. Excited?
