Liam Hemsworth Signing Up for Action in 'The Expendables' Sequel
Thus far, expected to return to the Sly Stallone testosterone-o-rama known as The Expendables 2 are Terry Crews, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, as well as Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger who will reprise their cameos from the first film with a somewhat larger presence. It wouldn't be an '80s/'90s action packed reunion without Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris, who will also be crushing skulls for the first time in TE2. But the latest to join the cast of the sequel is up-and-comer Liam Hemsworth, making him the young newbie in an ensemble of otherwise old-timers.
Variety got the scoop that The Hunger Games actor, and younger brother of Thor's Chris Hemsworth, will be co-starring the film as a sniper, but that's all we know about his role right now. We've also heard recent reports that Nicolas Cage and John Travolta would be joining the cast but that remains unconfirmed (although, if true, would likely cause computers everywhere to simultaneously explode due to an influx of awesomeness). Stallone himself also said that a couple of other actors might be in the mix when he told EW recently, "I like using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot. So we’re always looking for actors like Michael Biehn and Michael Pare. I like those kinds of guys." No official word on whether they have joined the cast thought.
Anything is possible this time around. Willis has stated that Stallone was "going for all the marbles this time." Whatever that means. Must be an old guy's expression. Stallone himself has even said the idea he's had for a sequel for quite some time is "quite radical." What would really be radical is if they actually went balls to the wall on this one and brought in everyone from the aforementioned cast to Steven Seagal to Danny Trejo to Mel Gibson to Hooch from Turner & Hooch. That would be a film that would live up to the insanity we expected but were unfortunately not given with the underwhelming The Expendables.
Of course there are some fresh eyes behind the camera with the sequel, as Simon West (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic) is taking over the director's chair from Stallone, with a script from David Agosto and Ken Kaufman. Yes, the guy who wrote Curious George and Muppets from Space is apparently one of the best writers for The Expendables 2. Lionsgate has a release date set for August 17th, 2012 next year, and be sure to stay tuned for any developments.
