Wayne's World

Though film is obviously a visual medium, great music can sometimes make or break a flick for an audience. There are even some scenes memorable simply because of the music in them, which brings us to Moviefone's list of what they have determined are the 50 Greatest Music Scenes in Films. However, they've laid out some rules for their choices. First of all, no scenes were picked that have non-diagetic music (or music that doesn't actually come from within the scene of the film) and no scenes come from films that are musicals. So without further adieu, let's take a look at some of their choices for the greatest music scenes in film history.

Here's the Top 15 scenes from Moviefone's full list:
#15: "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" bar scene in Top Gun
#14: "Stonehenge" concert scene in This Is Spinal Tap
#13: Cantina scene from the original Star Wars
#12: "Dirty Dancing" finale with Swayze in Dirty Dancing
#11: "As Time Goes By" melancholy scene in Casablanca
#10: "Tequila" dance scene in PeeWee’s Big Adventure
#9: "Twist and Shout" on the parade float in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
#8: "Tiny Dancer" sing-along on the bus in Almost Famous
#7: "Shout" toga party scene in National Lampoon's Animal House
#6: "Unchained Melody" pottery scene in Ghost
#5: "Ride of the Valkyries" helicopter assault in Apocalypse Now
#4: "Stuck in the Middle With You" ear hacking scene in Reservoir Dogs
#3: Tom Cruise goofs off in his underwear to "Old Time Rock N Roll" in Risky Business
#2: "Bohemian Rhapsody" sing-along in the car in Wayne's World

#1: Lloyd Dobler standing outside Diane Court's window, arms aloft with boombox playing "In Your Eyes" from Say Anything…

We were just going to include the YouTube for the top pick from Moviefone's list, but I love that Bohemian Rhapsody scene from Wayne's World so damn much that we just had to include it. And honestly, the rest of their picks are right on the money. You can check out all 50 of their seletions (along with videos for all of the scenes) right here to see what else made the cut, but just wasn't powerful enough for to make the Top 15.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised the infamous dancing scene featuring John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever wasn't higher up, but the scene in question is at least on the list anyway. You'll also find installments from music junkie Quentin Tarantino and plenty of selections that will just make you smile, so be sure to check out the full list. What do you think of Moviefone's list? Any other great scenes they left off?

ethan - i know these lists are subjective , but you HAVE to have "we're off to see the wizard" from "wizard of oz" at #1. another one is "you make me want to shout" from "the temptations" movie.

wizard of oz was a musical and if you read the notes on how this was judged it says "not from musicals"......sorry

i read the notes - i've never considered it a musical; however, if they do, then that explains that - thanks!

How could they miss Cuban Pete from the Mask? I literally wanted to get up and dance in the theater when I heard it.

number two should have been number one.
  • nvm....missed it.

I can agree with many of these choices. I always feel that the best scenes are the ones that stick to the public memory so well that the song and movie are forever connected, diegetic or not.

Ok so I know it's kind of chick flicky, but I love the part in Love Actually when Hugh Grant is rockin' to the Pointer Sisters' "Jump to My Love." And where's something from Monty Python?

Say anything can kinda suck it. Better off dead is where it's at! EVERYBODY WANT SOME!!

This list means nothing to me when there is no mention of the greatest movie ever mad...RAD! The scene with Cru Jones on the dance floor with his BMX bike dancing to Send Me An Angel alongside Lori Loughlin is AMAZING!!!
