A Better Life Trailer

Following Twilight: New Moon and The Golden Compass, director Chris Weitz decided to take a step back and direct a low-budget drama for his next film, originally titled The Gardener but now known as A Better Life. LA Times' blog 24 Frames debuted the first official trailer for Weitz's new film, starring Mexican actor Demián Bichir (Castro in Che) as Carlos Galindo, an illegal immigrant father just trying to take care of his family. When Carlos' truck is stolen, the father is powerless to turn to law enforcement, but the crisis brings him closer to his potentially wayward son. I must say, this looks fantastic, I'm considerably impressed. Wow.

Watch the first official trailer for Chris Weitz's A Better Life:

A gardener (Demián Bichir) in East Los Angeles struggles to keep his son away from gangs & immigration agents while also traveling across town to perform landscaping work for the city's wealthiest landowners.

A Better Life, formerly known as The Gardener, is directed by filmmaker Chris Weitz, brother of Paul Weitz, who previously directed Down to Earth, About a Boy, The Golden Compass and New Moon. The script was written by Eric Eason (Manito, Journey to the End of the Night) from a story by Roger L. Simon. Summit is bringing A Better Life to theaters on June 24th in summer. We expect it to play limited before going wide.

  • It's like a modern day retelling of DeSica's Ladri di Biciclette... Yes, I am that pretentious.

Thinking the same thing, J A....I just hope it's not as depressing. And we're not pretentious, we just know our movies!

I like the film's original title "The Gardner" much better, whereas "A Better Life" feels a bit unsubtle, but it does look like it has the potential to be good. Gotta love that fantastic song at the beginning of the trailer -- though it worked a bit better in the trailer for "The Motorcycle Diaries."

Uh that was a very effective trailer. Well done.
  • Looks great, not too over the top which helps.
  • Wow, that just hit me in the gut. I would still argue that "The Gardener" is a better title.
