More news from the "no way!" department. Deadline reports that Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn has secured the directing job on Silver Pictures' remake of the 1976 sci-fi Logan's Run. But that's not all, as Refn comes attached with actor Ryan Gosling, who is making his tentpole movie "leap" and starring in the sci-fi flick as Logan 5, a "Sandman" whose job it was to put to permanent sleep those who try to escape mandatory death. It's obvious that studios have wanted to get Gosling back into the mix since The Notebook in 2004, but he's been staying on the edge with indies and working with directors like Refn and Cianfrance.
This remake has been in development for quite a while, at one time with Carl Erik Rinsch attached to direct before he switched over to 47 Ronin. Silver Pictures' Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman, with Kerry Foster exec producing. Shooting will start in the fall after Refn finishes on Drive. I guess the good news is that Alex Garland's script is still in the mix, so we know we will have a fantastic story behind it, too. It's based on William F. Nolan's novel, though they've probably made drastic tweaks to various elements, as Gosling is now 30 and the original "age of extinction" in the book was 21. The sci-fi drama follows Logan 5 as he tries to outrun the mandatory death sentence that awaits all 30-year old's.
Last summer, Joel Silver said that it "should be a big 3D movie and it should be devised and shot in 3D," so that's what to expect. There is quite a bit of sci-fi in the works, which is exciting to see, I just hope they're really hiring the best people. I would obviously love to see footage from Refn's Drive, which is probably what sold Warner Bros, but instead I'm going on my experience with a few of his other films, and I'm not a fan. I don't really enjoy Refn so I'm worried about his involvement, as this is a sci-fi remake that I have been very excited to see come together, but I'm still hoping for the best. At least we'll have the very handsome and very talented Ryan Gosling in the front seat. I wonder which beautiful actress Refn will cast to star with him?
