Their first collaboration in the form of the action thriller Drive hit Cannes Film Festival last month (Alex seemed to thoroughly enjoy it), and director Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling are already set to reunite for a remake of Logan's Run. However, it sounds like before the sci-fi revamp gets off the ground, Gosling and Refn will team-up again for Only God Forgives, the filmmaker's gestating Bangkok-set modern western (East meets West) about a Thai police lieutenant and a gangster settling their differences in a Thai-boxing match. Gosling is replacing Luke Evans who previously was lined up to star in the film.
Gosling joins Kristin Scott Thomas who has already snagged the lead female role in the contemporary western. Though Twitch broke the story initially, it's Variety that says Evans recently landing a role as Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit, his schedule for that film made him unavailable to shoot Only God Forgives in November. If Drive turns out to be as good as the buzz indicates, then you can bet I'll be looking forward to this project. Though I'm not the biggest fan of westerns, taking the genre's elements and stories and placing them in a modern setting seems to work for me. Surely more casting is on the way, so stay tuned.
