Teaser Trailer for Andrea Arnold's Adaptation of 'Wuthering Heights'

The director's 2009 film Fish Tank found great success on the film festival circuit and was even added to the prestigious Criterion Collection when it was released on DVD. Now director Andrea Arnold is back with an adaptation of Emily Brontë classic novel Wuthering Heights which hit the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival last week (make sure you check out Alex's coverage right here) and we have the teaser trailer for the drama which has received mixed reviews from up North. The visuals look rather stunning, but it's somewhat strange to see a film shot in Academy Ratio (1.37:1). Check out the teaser trailer below!

Based on Emily Brontë classic novel, Wuthering Heights follows A poor young English boy named Heathcliff is taken in by the wealthy Earnshaw family where he develops an intense relationship with his young foster sister, Cathy. Kaya Scodelario and James Howson play the older versions of Cathy and Heathcliff in this adaptation of the story while Shannon Beer and Solomon Glave playing the younger versions of the two classic characters. Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank) directed the film adapted by Olivia Hetreed (Girl with a Pearl Earring). The film opens in the UK on November 11th, but no US release date is available yet.

I feel like Andrea Arnold's directing style might suit the story quite well (based on Fish Tank). Was never a fan of the novel, but rather gorgeous teaser.

      I can't believe the way the lot of you are going nuts over what happy camper said. I'm cool with Heathcliff being black, I care more about his performance than his color, but that being said, a black servant mixing with a white society gal during that period of time is COMPLETELY unrealistic. It's like that parody of Gone with the Wind where Rhett Butler left Scarlett for a slave, it sounds like a great idea, but it NEVER would have happened. I think quite possibly they popped him in there for shock value, because they knew people were more likely to see an alternative version of the story rather than the same old, same old. It would have been just as effective is they turned Heathcliff into a lesbian. Considering the recent riots in England, racial tension is still alive and well there, so PLEASE spare me the illusion that we're all shiny, happy people getting along with one another. Current events tell us otherwise.

        Read the book -- although most scholars believe Heathcliff was a gypsy (Romany), many believe he could have been black. He is in fact called Black, several times.

        i have to agree with @57bad7c2015809ed37c0de882d42d864:disqus - he is described in the book at least once as being a gypsy. as to being black, well, this can be both supported and refuted in equal measure from the words of the novel. anyway, it's not uncommon for race or gender to be switched in classical adaptations - it can be gimmicky and unnecessary, certainly, but if it amplifies or draws out other themes the creators are trying to underline, it's legitimate artistic licence, especially if the creators are going more for atmosphere and image than a direct literal adaptation, as seems the case here. whether it *works*, of course, is up to the viewer! btw, the recent riots in the UK were instigated by those from poorer communities. while many of these were certainly black, the rioters were of all racial types and, within days, it was abundantly clear that the main drivers behind the riots were social exclusion and poverty, not race.

Wuthering Heights is a really powerful story. As far as love stories go, modern movies have nothing on it. Based on the trailer, Arnold has discovered a very raw and visceral thing within it. This looks fantastic.

  Er, I'm not sure I'd call Wuthering Heights a love story. Raw and visceral, yes (that's not something anyone needs to find within it - it's at the surface of the text). One of the most disturbing books I've ever read, yes. But Cathy/Heathcliff is no sweeping romance...

    It most certainly is a love story. It's what kills both of them. They're love for each other not only wants the other near, it wants to pierce itself through the other because it's so strong. That's why it leaves such a strong impression.

      Oh, please........that's not real love, that's novel/movie love. If Heathcliff really loved Cathy, he wouldn't have devoted so much time to tormenting her, he would have just let her go. True love in the real world is hard work, not people sitting around pining for each other.

Everything about this film interests me. The use of the academy ratio, the natural lighting they used. It all seems very much in the vein of Barry Lyndon, which can only bode well.

The images sell it no doubt about that. While I'm not a fan of things being changed from their source for no apparent reason, like a character's characteristics (race, gender and or age etc.), this looks like a contender for a powerful drama. Color me curious (pun intended).
