'Thor' Star Chris Hemsworth Set for Action Thriller 'Shadow Runner'
After throwing around Mjölnir as Marvel's thunder god superhero Thor, actor Chris Hemsworth landed the lead male role in Universal's fairytale adaptation Snow White and the Huntsman. While that film will see him playing the male protagonist in a fantasy setting, his next project will throw him into a military setting. Deadline reports Sony Pictures has picked up a pitch for a film called Shadow Runner with Hemsworth set to star in the film. The film is apparently based on an original idea by Drive screenwriter Hossein Amini, and while the plot itself is being kept under wraps, we do know the "inspiration" behind it.
Reportedly, the idea was influenced by an incident in which an Israeli assassination team targeted a Hamas leader whom the Israelis believe murdered several soldiers and helped stockpile Iranian-made missiles. Their target was tracked to Dubai, and the Israelis managed to smuggle in an entire 17-person hit team to take him out in the corridor of a five-star hotel. The hotel security cameras caught the operatives trailing the victim only to show up later coming out of an elevator after he had been killed.
The film isn't going to follow this exact story, but will simply see Hemsworth leading a similar elite team of operatives who take on impossible tasks. Sounds a bit like Mission Impossible without the fancy spy work, but if Drive is all it's hyped up to be, then hopefully Amini has crafted something cool and original. Columbia Pictures president thinks so in the standard publicity fluff saying, "We think the story is a terrific action thriller for Chris Hemsworth." The guy was certainly intimidating as the god of thunder, so hopefully he'll be just as powerful suited up as a covert operative.
