Are you ready to laugh? (Get it?) Time for another list of best movies to discuss and argue for weeks. Time Out London has created and revealed their list of the 100 Best Comedy Movies, as chosen by "more than 200 people whose job it is to make you laugh." In reality, what that means is they actually asked "dozens of comedy writers, comedy directors, comic actors and stand-up comedians" to choose their own favorites, including picks from Dan Aykroyd, Richard Curtis, Edgar Wright, Kim Noble, Stephen Merchant, Jo Brand and many more. We've pulled the full list (via SlashFilm) of all 100 for you below for discussion purposes.
Over on the Time Out site, they have a full rundown and write-ups, details and more info for all 100 of the comedies. This is such a comprehensive and complete list (since it has 100 of the greatest titles), that there's really not any comedies that I love that aren't on here (except for maybe Frank Oz's Death at a Funeral, to name one). But that's the thing, comedy is so subjective, that everyone has their own comedic tastes and favorites and there might be one or two that didn't make the cut. That said, these 100 I think definitely embody a line-up of movies that I might even call objectively very funny, to most people, as a lot of these on here are my favorites as well. Glad to see them put together a list like this with so many great comedic contributors, too.
For those who may not be entirely satisfied, the Time Out London site also includes a fantastic section that has favorite lists of comedies from ALL of the contributors, organized by their name (most are UK based). For example, Edgar Wright has some of the top choices like This Is Spinal Tap, Airplane!, Blazing Saddles and Life of Brian as his favorites as well, but also listed Raising Arizona as his actual #1 best comedy. Dan Aykroyd also has favorites on his list that include the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup, The Great Dictator, Dr. Strangelove and Goodfellas. There's just such a wide range of fantastic, hilarious comedies to choose from!
Are there any truly great comedies that are missing? What do you think of this "all time" list?
