Video Interview: Actor Luke Evans on Tarsem's 'Immortals' & 'Hobbit'

November 9, 2011

Luke Evans

"Prove me right!" is one of the many fierce and iconic lines Zeus has in Tarsem's Immortals. A few weeks ago I sat down with actor Luke Evans, who plays Zeus, for an interview discussing playing a Greek god in a Tarsem epic. Evans is Welsh actor on the rise appearing in a number of high profile movies all within a few years: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, the other Clash of the Titans, Tamara Drewe, Blitz and W.S. Anderson's Three Musketeers. He's also playing Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, which I couldn't help ask about near the end, as he's already shooting that. It's a brisk but engaging interview, please enjoy.

Watch the full interview with actor Luke Evans from Immortals, recorded on my Flip cam:

I've been impressed by all of Luke's performances and this was my first time meeting him. Evans has quickly risen to be someone to watch out for as a commanding force who can still show empathy, and always does a great job no matter who he's playing. I wanted to briefly cover his background and how he got to this point, as well as his work on Immortals, and what it is like filming with Tarsem Singh as the director, since he seems very unique to work with. I'm glad I got to talk with him and I hope I covered some interesting topics. Immortals (watch a trailer), also starring Henry Cavill as Theseus, was directed by Tarsem (watch that interview here), and is arriving in theaters starting November 11th in glorious 3D. Go see it this weekend!

    Immortals was really bad.
    • Nah, I saw it before interviewing him and I liked it a lot. It's visually incredible, fun to watch, the script is a bit weak, but overall it's an entertaining movie, honestly.
      • Nice interview mister! Your approach is pretty mellow too, laidback is better than the usual interview style that people have, I suppose maybe with the timing factor people have to get as much info as they can, but you always roll pretty good.

It's not visually "incredible". It's not that fun to watch. And the script and characters and some of the acting is REALLY weak. Luke Evans does a good job though, and as I wrote further down - he's great in Tamara Dewes (or Drewes maybe it's called)

what? i saw it early last night - it IS a fun watch and it IS visually amazing..........i wasn't blown away by the story but i had  a good time watching it. by the way - you think the acting and script in "tamara drewes" is good? isn't.  so, you're standards aren't very consistent.
          • Ryderup
I said he's great in tamara drewes, which I think he is.
          • Yea I'm with you... but to each his own, I guess. I liked it, but I expect some people to hate it.

Fantastic interview! I can't believe you got Luke for 10 minutes...brilliant, you got him talking a lot and I like how you tried to ask him different questions. Great job!
  • Nice!! I'm glad you asked him about how it is to work with Tarsem, I was afraid you wouldn't :) Good job, man! He seems like a nice guy. I really can't wait to see Immortals!
  • I am not Batman
good interview, Alex. It's safe to say you have come a long way from the first video interview a couple years ago. Rivaling Weintraub!
    • Glad to hear, I never know how it sounds to everyone else, but that makes me a bit relieved. Thank you. :)

Luke Evans isn't bad in Immortals, but my word it's a bad film.
    • Ryderup
Agree. Its a terrible film. But Evans does his job. he's great in tamara Dewes also.

    Cool interview Alex.
  • LOVED the final shot of that video, LOL.  Great interview, good questions. Even though Mickey Rourke was in it, I LOVED Immortals! He did a fantastic job portraying Zeus, and I'm Greek so there! Can't wait for the Hobbit, the part of the book with Bard and Smaug is my favourite!!!!!! -Maria
