Watch: Plenty of Actors Acting Like Woody Allen in Woody Allen Films
After seeing the writer/director's most recent film Midnight in Paris, one of my biggest praises for the film is directed towards Owen Wilson and his uncanny ability to channel Woody Allen and his signature personality and demeanor throughout the film. However, in looking back at all of Allen's films, it's not hard to see that there's pretty much always one character, usually the lead actor, that is just a surrogate for the filmmaker himself. Thankfully Film Drunk has put together this short and sweet compilation of a whole slew of actors in Allen's films where it's impossible not to see the director coming out in their performances.
Here's A Retrospective of Woody Allen Surrogates courtesy of Film Drunk:
The video runs through all the obvious traits of Allen that come through in these characters played by Will Ferrell, Jason Biggs, Larry David, Kenneth Branagh and more. From stammering to overt references to his own intellectual achievements and more, it becomes very clear just how much Allen informs his characters, not just through the script, but also through the actors essentially doing their best impressions of the director with their own spin on him. It's especially interesting to think about someone like Rebecca Hall taking on Allen's idiosyncrasies in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Anyway, with Woody Allen's next film just firming up its cast, I can't wait to see how it turns out.
