Indie Spirit Awards 2013 - Moonrise Beasts

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they won't necessarily be receiving at the Oscars - though we always hope they get something. The nominees for the 28th annual Film Indie Spirit Awards were announced today (via Deadline), and can be seen in full below. Sean Baker's Starlet was selected to receive the annual Robert Altman Award, bestowed upon a film's director, casting director and its entire ensemble cast. The winners will be announced on Saturday, February 23rd in Santa Monica.

You'll notice an [IMDb] (or trailer) link next to each film. This is so you can discover new films, because there is guaranteed to be at least one you have never heard of. Here is the complete list of 2013 nominees:

Yet another great year for Indie Spirits, this is why I love them. They always recognize some of the best films of the year that deserve it. From Ann Dowd in Compliance, to Rosemarie DeWitt in Your Sister's Sister, to Mary Elizabeth Winstead from Smashed (I want her to win!), plus of course everything from Beasts of the Southern Wild, still one of my favorites. There's also Michael Péna in End of Watch, screenplay noms for Ruby Sparks, Seven Psychopaths, Arbitrage, Safety Not Guaranteed and Ethan's fave Celeste and Jesse Forever. Plus all the nominations for Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook. An outstanding year!

For last year's list of nominees and winners, which included Take Shelter, The Descendants and mostly The Artist as the big winner, click here. A very big indie congratulations to all of this year's excellent nominees! Winners will be announced at the ceremony on Saturday, February 23rd on the beach out in Santa Monica.

went to see Silver Linings a few hours ago, really good and well worth the money. It portrays bipolar accurately while still being quite fun

Best movie of the year so far - Moonrise Kingdom...haven't seem Silver Linings, Argo, The Master, Lawless yet...

Moonrise Kingdom was Great, but where's Twilight? Im really sick of these amazing films going unnoticed at awards season! No nomination for Taylor Lautner? unfair prejudice against mannequins needs to stop people.
      • David Darida
Poor Taylor indeed...six packs ain't enough for Academy though...u need an unpopular movie...that's the reason why Dark Knight or Twilight can't win lol...
